Mancienne backed to bring class

Tuesday 28th October 2008, 12:26PM GMT.

mancienne.jpegWolves’ new defender Michael Mancienne has been backed to add “all the quality needed” to Mick McCarthy’s under-fire defence.

The 20-year-old Chelsea stopper has signed on loan until December 29 and is available to make his debut in the Molineux clash against Swansea.

Wolves striker Sam Vokes knows all about Mancienne, from their recent battles in the UEFA under-21 two-legged play-off between England and Wales.

Vokes admitted the pacy Mancienne – whose natural spring sees him win plenty of headers despite being just 5ft 10ins – came out on top from their tussles. He believes he will add to the quality and competition at the back.

The striker said: “He managed to outjump me a fair few times. He has got good strength and manages to get up well. The fact he’s so quick means he’s got all the quality you’d want from a defender. I certainly had a couple of good battles with him.

“He has lots of pace but also has good strength and wins a lot of headers for his height. He’s a great defender. To be at Chelsea means he’s got something and I could see he was a good player.”

“To have him at Wolves will be good and will add to the strength in depth .”

Mancienne had attracted interest from a few clubs but, once he heard of interest from Molineux, he reckons he his mind was made up.

He said: “I think there were a few clubs interested, but as soon as I heard about Wolves, I knew it was the best option.

“I’m looking forward to trying to get some first-team football and to come to a club at the top of the Championship is great.

“I had a chat with Mick McCarthy yesterday afternoon  and I’m looking forward to working for him. I’ve played against Wolves for QPR, while I also played for England under-21s at Molineux against Poland.

“The atmosphere was great that night and it looks a superb stadium to play in. I also know ‘Kights’, Sylvan and Richard from the England under-21 set-up.

“They’re all good players, but there are a lot here.”

He must play tonight and Stearman must come back in at the expense of Collins and Ward.
Ward should be considered as cover for the left wing slot.
Revenge is required tonight. Attrocious conditions down there, with a reserve forward line and a dodgy offside for the second goal.
A good passing team but we can beat them and put the pressure on the Blues, who have a tough fixture at QPR!

On paper mancienne and stearman sound like a dream combo, my only concern would be the lack of experience they both have, there are some very experienced strikers in the ccc who may exploit the lack of experience, phillips, hunt, oconnor, etc, any thoughts guys ????

However its about time a statementis made about Hennessey. All this cobblers about being dropped and tired doesn’t wash when he is playing for his country.
    The silence is very suspicious.

I think he will start, no point having a premiership player on the bench. Also its all rumour mill about henns, he will be back between the sticks tonight. Murray I guess will be on the bench. Got a feeling S.Ward will be pushed up to midfield.

This whole Hennessey rubbish is turning into the same as what happend last year with Eastwood.

I think Mick won that battle, what has Freddie done since????

There is a reason for Hennessey not being in the team and Ikeme is as good as him. Back off Ikeme and let the lad do his job!!!

Dare I say are people beginging to see that McCarthy means business this season. Has the penny fianlly dropped.

Or are Kites, SEB, Iwelumo, Mancienne, Jarvis, Foley, D Jones, Henry, Keogh, Ward, Stearman, Vokes and Gray, all carp.

Or is it that you can only see the negative in everything.

This is great news and if we should get to the premiership it’s exactly the type of player we should be bringing in on a permanent basis.

Ward yet again proved that he does not deserve the knocks. He was top class at left back.

Lets hope Mancienne plays against Cardiff on Saturday as our defense leaves a lot to be desired, demote our goalkeeper and bring back either Murray or Hennessey
