Yob fear for new garages

Plans for new garages may get the go-ahead despite a petition claiming they will attract yobs.

A petition of 20 signatures and two letters of objection against the Halesowen scheme have gone to planning officers at Dudley Council.

Judy Gale submitted the plans for garages to be used by people living near the site at the rear of Long Lane. They would be in three blocks and be a mix of double and triple garages.

Residents fear an increase in noise from cars and that they could be disturbed “at all times of day and night”. They are also worried that the site could be a hotspot for anti-social behaviour and affect the security of their homes.

They also say that access to the development would be “inadequate” and could make it difficult for fire engines to get to the garages in emergency situations.

Planning officers have recommended that the project be approved at a meeting on November 3, saying that there would not be a “detrimental” impact on residents.

They added that the garages would encourage the site to be “well-used” and “would make potential criminals feel more uncomfortable and exposed.”

A previous application for the site in June was rejected because of concerns about traffic safety. This would be due to the increased use of the driveway leading up to the garages.

This problem has been addressed. Also, plans to build nine bungalows on the site of the former Park Buildings in Park Road, Lower Gornal, may also be approved.

They have been submitted to Dudley Council by Phillip Cartwright of Ravenscroft Developments (UK) Ltd.

The one-bedroomed bungalows are aimed at elderly and disabled people and the applicant says there is a need for this type of housing.
