The nine firefighters from Blue Watch, nearly all of whom asked for autographs for their mothers, wrote to the pin-up to ask for his help in raising awareness of a campaign to install free smoke alarms in the city.

Last night, ahead of his penultimate performance of All The Fun Of The Fair in Wolverhampton, the singer told the Express & Star he had been overwhelmed by the response to the show.

“It’s been brilliant,” he said.

“We have sold out every night. I’m very touched.

“I always enjoy coming to Wolverhampton – I was here for Aspects of Love – but All The Fun Of The Fair has been very well-received.”

Crew commander Michael Peake of Wolverhampton fire station said: “We’re very grateful that Mr Essex has given his support to this campaign.”

Wolverhampton firefighters are offering to install smoke alarms for free. Call 01902 771658.
