Moore goals needed from Luke

Thursday 23rd October 2008, 1:54PM BST.

moore.jpgAlbion boss Tony Mowbray admits Luke Moore’s confidence is in danger of being damaged as he continues to search for his first Baggies goal.

Mowbray has urged the £3million summer signing to keep striving for a first team start, after he fell behind Roman Bednar and Ishmael Miller in the pecking order.

Yet the Baggies manager does admit that a lack of goalscoring form, allied to limited opportunities in the first team, has left Moore in a ‘Catch 22’ situation.

Moore’s wait for a senior goal will extend to a year, if he fails to score against Hull or Newcastle in the next five days. He last scored for Villa at Bolton on 28 October 2007.

Mowbray said: “The circumstances are dictating it’s a difficult situation for him. I’ve told them that he just needs to work as hard as he can in training and when the opportunity comes to play, whether it be in reserve team football or the first team, he’s got to do what he can to push himself to the forefront of my mind – by scoring goals and working hard.

“He will be hoping, and I hope that when he gets an opportunity any type of goal goes in for him, a scruffy one or whatever, just to give him a bit of confidence.”

A frustrating start to the season has made Moore’s switch from Villa the biggest question mark from the Baggies’ impressive summer of signings.

But Mowbray still believes the 22-year-old has a desire to force his way into the Baggies’ first team.

He said: “They all want to play in our team but they also understand we are now in the Premier League. It comes down to having an understanding of what a coach wants and how he wants to play, having an understanding of the players they are competing with and being respectful of them.

“If they are in the team, they are in and if they’re not, they’re not. But they all have to continue to work hard.”

I for one want Luke to suceed at the albion,I believe he has incredible talent,he just needs that single goal however ugly to kick start his campaign. The formation Hull play should allow us to impose our style of play and I think this would be an ideal game for Luke. Not that its going to be a cake walk but hard graft and our skill also the 13th man will see us through. We won’t know if he can do it until he’s given a few starts in the team. Seems very odd that we spend the cash then keep him on the bench. Unless he gets a go, everything else is just conjecture.

in my eyes a total waste of money
all my villa mates are still laughing about it
for me he needs to go out on loan and score a few goals at another club
then maybe when he returns fans may see a different player because up to now the fans are not happy with what they have seen.

Luke could and should start alongside Roman Bednar on Saturday.

The last home game he applied himself well against Fulham…ad if nobody seems to recall, set up the last goal with great control and awareness against West Ham for Chrissy Brunt’s winner

If he starts Saturday..Get behind the kid, we havegot behind an out of form Ishmael week in week out after all!!!

I think he should start alongside Roman on Saturday. Not many strikers would score goals playing the few minutes he has. Don’t expect him to be a Bednar and start chasing everything, it isn’t his style. Give him the service and play to his strengths (pace and finishing) and he should deliver.

He is the best natural finsisher we have just get behind him!!!!

I’ve told you before, Luke Moore is an idle git, he wont run for a ball, he has to have it placed on his head or to his feet while in the box.
Those who think he should go out on loan, think on…his brother went out on loan from Villa and he’s never been seen since.

How long has Mowbray been saying this now,I think
he`s played 1 cup game and a league game,so how
does our manager expect him to score goals when
the kid is stuck on the bench all the time.
If he isn`t in the starting 11 for the Hull City game then I`ll be very dissapointed.
I reckon Luke Moore must of heard “you must
work in training” a million times.

I think the headline should really have been: ‘Moore goals, Moore effort, Moore desire, Moore anything….please Luke’. I can only go on what I’ve seen to date and I’m not impressed at all. I really hope he turns it around but it seems like the Vile got the best end of this deal.

19 – I think we know that TM dosn’t play favorites – what happens in training has an effect on who gets picked for the match.

I can only sumise that TM dosn’t see enough of “something” from Luke Moore in training…. either that or Miller and Bednar are just “better” (and I’m a Luke Moore fan).

Perhaps the reason why Luke Moore doesn’t get picked is that Mowbray doesn’t think he deserves it. Mowbray is not Bryan Robson. He picks players on merit, not sentiment. He had enough starts last season to make some sort of impact and all he did was get himself sent off and cost us the game against Leicester.

I think people should get off his back and give him a chance. All palyers need a run in the team especially strikers. I don’t know if he is the answer but until he has a run of games like Bednar and Miller have we cannot judge him.

if we do actually give luke another chance he will produce the goods. He is our best striker mainly because of his quality first touch. All he need is a goal even if it is from closing the keeper down and the ball smashing him in the face and breaking his nose. A Goals a Goal.

Not sure if you are a Baggie or a Dingle idiot trying to wind us up. Anyway, I’ll give you the benefit(marginal) of the doubt and address you as the former. I don’t like to be insulting but people with your attitude make my skin crawl.
Luke Moore may or may not be crap but if he is, he’s our crap. I bow to your obviously greater knowledge that the best way to build a strikers confidence is to continually abuse and belittle him.
‘Don’t get me wrong I’d love him to score goals for us.’ Very big of you but how about helping the lad. Yes Moore has had sparse opportunity to make a name for himself and yes if TM thought he was better than our other two strikers, he would have had more chances but if Miller and Bednar get injured we may be relying on Luke Moore, let’s see if we can destroy him before then.
What’s the old saying? ‘If you can’t say anything good about someone, then say nothing.’
I’m an Albion supporter and I agree that if you pay to see them you have a right to express your criticism but the clue isn’t in the word Albion, it’s in the other word SUPPORTER.

I dont agree that Tony Mowbray doesn`t have his
favorites,Chris Brunt and Robert Koren always get
picked no matter how bad they play,if Mowbray has
anything out him then both players will be

29 – You don’t drop a player after one bad game – and i can’t recall Koren having too many bad games, and certainly not one after the other.

Brunt doesn’t start every game, but he offers something no other player does – a fantastic left foot cross – and he is one of the very few that have actually scored this season so far – so dropping him seems a little extreme to me.

No player has been 100% in every game – and never will be…. luckily TM has something called a memory amd knows what the players are capable of.

I don’t disagree with your suggested line up – just your reasons for leaving the players out.

    I think Carson,Zuiverloon,Robinson,Valero,and
Greening have all been pretty consistent in every
    game.
I agree that Chris Brunt has got a great left
foot, but he doesnt use it often enough and games
just seem to pass him by,the only reason
he doesnt start every game is due to the fact
that he`s injury prone,he will always be a
    Mowbray `LOVE QUEEN`.
To be honest I`d rather Mowbray give Graham
Dorrans a chance rather than persisting with
    Chris Brunt.
