Wolves blog: Oh Freddy Freddy

Friday 17th October 2008, 9:10AM BST.

eastwoodpre.jpegWolves blogger Nathan Lloyd discusses the hot topic in town, the Return of Eastwood, ahead of the Midlands derby against Coventry at Molineux.

Mixed fortunes for all the lads returning from international duty this week.

Far too much focus and far too many column inches have been dedicated to that Scottish miss and that Welsh own goal. Iwelumo missed a goal, big deal.

Anyway, he was wearing the colours of Scotland and not the only strip that really matters, apart from England that is.

The only thing that bothered me was that I had Scotland to win 1-0 with an Iwelumo goal and I would have netted a few hundred quid!

Vokes had a ball rifled at him from close range which bounced off him and in and that meant the England U21’s got through, so happy days!

I’m sure the big man will bounce back and Vokes will be just fine.  Anyway, I’m starting to fall into the negativity trap by going on about it, so I’ll shut up.

Back to the positives. Hennessey was brilliant in his two Welsh matches and was only beaten by an absolute exocet from Trochowski in the German game.

Edwards must also be in Mick’s thoughts for Saturday, after his first international goal scored against Liechtenstein and another great display against Germany.

Isn’t it odd what the international break throws up?  I thought I might be lamenting about injuries we could have picked up.

Instead, I’m sure that those players that have suffered misfortunes during the international break will have the full support of the Molineux crowd to revitalize them on Saturday.

Good to see Jody Craddock and Matt Hill on their way back to recovery.  Our defence has been very good in the main this season but it’s always nice to have competition for places.

So to Saturday and the return of the one that got away or the lazy one, or the ‘”he was useless anyway”, or the dribbling wizard. I’ll let you take your pick.

As I wrote in my last blog, Freddy really did split the opinion of many a Wolves fan during his season at the club.  I and many others could see that he has genuine talent and was always bemused as to why he never made it into the starting XI, game after game.

I could also see just how disruptive and unsettling his presence began to be at the club.  It was usually poor old Andy Keogh who would be on the end of a Freddy chant, if he dared miss a shot or misdirect a pass.

I know if I was running my socks off to win a game for my club and I heard those chants begin from what sounded like more than a minority of the crowd, I would begin to feel disheartened and my confidence would probably drain away.

Freddy simply didn’t fit in at the club and it was one of the most overused topics of discussion last season.

I know Mick won’t admit it, but he must be chuffed that in Iwelumo and SEB he has got not only 2 fantastic strikers but also a partnership to challenge any in this division to argue in the face of the Freddy departure.

It will be interesting to see what reaction from the crowd Eastwood gets on Saturday.  Personally I think he deserves a polite round of applause and that’s it.

Hopefully he will have a stinker and you will be able to no doubt hear some wise people around you murmur that he was never any good – and that they told you so.

I don’t like all the talk of Wolves fans putting a bet on him to score against us.  I’m not putting hard earned cash on an ex-player scoring against my club.

I have the pleasure of working in Coventry, so as you can imagine I am surrounded by Sky Blues fans who feel that under Coleman the club is definitely moving in the right direction.

Shame then that it will be Wolves who will be back on track after we thump Coventry 3-1 on Saturday.

Lets not let the Freddy thing over shadow what should be a cracking West Midlands derby.

Have a good weekend.

I was born under a Wanderers scarf and do you know where hell is?

    Merridale Wolf!

    hell is at West Brom……………..

I have said for weeks we will win 3-1 with Freddy scoring their goal and running over to our bench.

I think most people will give him an ok welcome, but if he kisses the Cov badge should he score he will lose any respect he had!

Hopefully when Freddy has a stinker on Saturday it will give some Wolves fans what counsellers call closure!!
One thing i would suggest as a topic of debate for you wolfies is this, is this current squad better than the one that got you promoted under Dave Jones??
Looking in from the outside i would suggest your current squad is far better, and that combined with the Championship appearing weaker this season im predicting automatic promotion for the Wolves.
Great blog Nath, all the best.

The thing with Freddy is we never knew what he is was like in training. Was his time keeping good? And his atitude? It obviously didn’t work out however if Mick had researched Freddy properly before signing him, we wouldn’t be having this debate. He would never have been signed in the first place.

1st sensible thing that’s been said on this matter!!! & its come from a baggie!!! Wot does that tell u about the average wolves fan!!!

    wbabomber well said my friend!!

By the way the attacking line now is better than it was under Dave Jones but bak then we had better centre halves!! Lescot & Butler Christ even Mark Clyde was better than Collins!!!

Their attack isn’t very penetrative but if they should score early then we could have problems. Freddy is dangerous – not only as a scorer but also as a ‘goal maker’ – remember the pass against Plymouth last game of last season?

I hope he plays well but we come away with a clean sheet. I feel he should have been given more of a chance but in Mick I trust so what happened I put down to circumstance.

I just hope we do win to get Reading and those welshmen out of our hair.

It’s sick that Birmingham still creep their wins – but that’s what they always have done and always will. I would hate to be a blues fan. Do’nt bother with the sleeping pills – just watch Bore – ingham City

    Hi Bomber

    How’s the training going?

I think we do potentially have a stronger team than when we were promoted. However I still think we lack a few wise heads like we had with Ince and Irwin who can lead the team through the rough times.

All the best, have a good weekend.

Good blog Nathan. I’d prefer it if Eastwood didn’t even play on Saturday but if he does I hope he doesn’t score (unless it’s an own goal) or set up anything. Time to let this awful debate die a death. Both player and manager must be heartily sick of last season’s events. As for the comment “players always do well against their former clubs” – not always the case. I think statistics would show that overall it evens out. Wolves to get back to winning ways on Saturday. That’s the most important thing!

Good blog Nathan and I dont want to go about “that miss”, but Iwelumo changed that game. He deserves credit for that, putting in a decent performance, only to be marred by that unfortunate incident.

Anyway, roll on tomorrow, hopefully the fixture that gets us back to winning ways. The international break was extremely well-timed, with many of our players hitting form during the two weeks.

    Good luck lads!

Just one minor point, historically our results have been fairly poor against Coventry over the Years.

History shouldn’t have any significance over the result of a match…..it often does though !

This is a really important game for Wolves. If we are to maintain a challenge for automatic promotion we need to start winning again, else a downward spiral like Watford and Cardiff have had in recent years will become a concern.

That spells out my interest in Saturdays game – I have no interest in who is playing for Coventry.

Hi Nath, the training is going ok although im a bit bored with it now and just want to do the damn thing.
Coventry do have one player i rate quite highly, Elliot Ward the centre half, always been impressed whenever i have seen him, and he takes a mean penalty!!

Great points again nathan, as ever. Freddy will probably score as ex players tend to, i believe he will be good for coventry , he does have goals in him but as a few have said, he is now history as far as wolves are concerned so forget him, he is just another team’s striker as far as i’m concerned so lets get behind the lads saturday and hope for a victory to get us back into the winning groove, they will be tough opposition but i think we have the pace and class to roll them over, I go for 3-1 with the inevitable eastwood goal for them should he play of course!!!! Lumo will bounce back in good fashion too!!

wbabomber, i dont comment too often but read what other people say everyday, and would just like to say i totally respect the fact your comments seem to be whole hearted, real, and from a man who knows his football, not the gold and black hating nonsense some other albion fans on here on a regular basis, although im not saying wolves fans dont do the same in the opposite direction.
on the topic of eastwood, surely its time to end the debate now, as it was plain to see to me he didnt fit in at wolves, end of. its not just about the quality of a player, which is what the majority of us see from the outside, but team morale, which is harder to judge. besides, if we still had him we probably wouldnt have signed iwelumo, who is in great form (well before the ban) or vokes, who i think is an outstanding prospect. lets hope he plays badly on saturday, giving us even more reason to put the whole saga to bed, and more importantly, giving my bragging rights over two friends at uni, who happen to be coventry fans!
we are the wolves, oh yes we are the wolves

WBAbomber the Dave Jones squad had the massive advantage of experience over todays squad,if the two teams were to play each other on top form I would go for Jonesy’s team to shade it. As for the championship being weaker,I disagree again! 88 points will not get you automatic promotion this year I reckon , although the three strongest teams went up last year . Good Luck at Old Trafford .

No ifs No buts, A win for Wolves is a must. We can’t afford to drop anymore points. The defence must not put all their efforts into Freddie Eastwood, Coventry have some slick players who will take advantage of any gaps that will appear by doing so. Come on YOU WOLVES GET A RESULT.

For God’s sake let it go.
I think Foley was saying (diplomatically) that he was an idle waster and didn’t like it when he had to get his hands dirty so therefore didn’t fit in.
You can’t win ‘em all, let’s move on, I’ve never known the kind of reaction from fans that this reserve team player has got.
I’m not going to the Coventry game unfortunately but if I was I for one would certainly NOT be clapping FE.
I actually hope they rush him back following his injury and he comes off after 20 minutes when Wolves are 2 up.
    Now that WOULD be funny.
