The schoolboy, named by neighbours as Russell Pinches, suffered head and leg injuries.

He was hit as he crossed the road on his bike outside his house in Ward Grove, Lanesfield. Shocked neighbours in the street described the Hill Avenue pupil being thrown into the air before his bike smashed through the rear windscreen of a Ford Fiesta which was parked in the street.

They said the youngster flew over the top of the car before landing in the middle of the road. He was taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital by air ambulance.

Neighbour Hilary Morgan, 59, said: “I was in the garden when it happened. He went out into the road on his bike and then was hit by a car.

“There was such a loud thud. It was absolutely awful. It really knocked me sick when I saw it. He didn’t move for about 15 seconds after he was hit and I really thought he was dead but then he started crying.

“The bike smashed through the windscreen and he carried on over the top of the car. It was a good job it was the bike and not him because who knows what would have happened.

“This road is a nightmare because of the cars parked at both sides. The driver didn’t stand a chance of seeing him. He is a really lovely little lad. I really hope he is OK.”

Meanwhile, a man in his 60s died after being hit by a car near Bewdley.

The man, believed to be from Oldbury, was knocked down on the A456 near the Royal Forester pub, in Callow Hill, at 7.30pm on Friday.

The victim, who has not yet been named, was treated at the scene for serious injuries before being taken by ambulance to the trauma unit at Selly Oak Hospital, where he died later.

Pc Paul Bosley, of the road traffic unit, said: “This is very sad and tragic case and our thoughts are with the family. A number of witnesses have been spoken to but I would urge anyone who was travelling on the road at this time to get in touch.”
