Trejo still on Baggies radar
Wednesday 8th October 2008, 11:27AM BST.
Albion could renew their interest in Real Mallorca striker Oscar Trejo in January, boss Tony Mowbray admitted today.
The Baggies manager confirmed the 20-year-old Argentine prospect remains on the club’s radar after they were unable to strike an agreement to sign him in August.
But Mowbray, speaking publicly for the first time about his interest in Trejo, insisted the pursuit of the highly-rated forward will not become the be-all and end-all of Albion’s January transfer business.
“Trejo is someone we were connected with and we made enquiries about,” said Mowbray. “As far as I know, I don’t think he is getting a game with Real Mallorca at the moment.
“I’m not sitting here thinking ‘wow, he’s someone we need to go and get him in for January’.
“That’s not the case. But I’m not going to deny he was a player we looked at and someone we could potentially bring in.
“But he’s not playing for his side at the moment.
“I’m not sitting here thinking ‘wow, he’s one we need to go and get’.”
Albion looked at the possibility of signing Trejo in the summer in a double swoop on Mallorca also involving midfielder Borja Valero.
But while Valero became the Baggies’ £4.7m record signing after they activated a release clause in his contract, the deal for Trejo never got off the ground.
The player was initially reluctant to leave the Spanish island while his club were unwilling to sell amid concerns over the signals another sale would send to their supporters.
Leading scorer Daniel Guiza had already departed for Fenerbace, while Valero was one of several other players allowed to move on.
Mallorca saw retaining Trejo’s services as a signal of their ambition but they may be persuaded to change their stance if he is unable to force his way into their team.
Meanwhile, reports linking Albion with Ivory Coast midfielder Gilles Yapi Yapo were today said to be wide of the mark.

We definately need additional players during the transfer window and i would presume this weekend will be a great opportunity to scout potential targets (if internationals). A striker is a must, who?? I have no idea??

Does anyone know if Trejo, or that De Sutter fella are any good?
I heard a rumour about Eidur Gudjohnson too, but that surely can’t be true can it?!
I’d like us to go for Vela from Arsenal on loan in January

de sutter was supposed to be an excellent prospect – but i am sure he was out with a cruciate injury at the start of the year and dont know what form he has hit since his return..

Vela would be an outstanding signing on loan but i beleive loads of clubs tried and failed to convinvce Wenger to let him go out on loan. Good shout though, maybe Mowbray can convince him to come to the baggies as he knows we play a style of football that would suit him.
As for Eidur at Barca, i doubt it, he is reportedly on £80,000 a week!!!

My mate who works in Holland (same guy who gave me the low down on Olsson, Looney, and Donk) keeps telling me that Marcus Berg would suit the English game.
He is only 22 and already has a great strike rate, he has started this season really well and rumour has it his club would welcome good offers for him. We all know Mowbray likes the dutch league so i guess he his more than aware of this guy, as i say my mate reckons hes good and hes been right so far concerning the others!!

Cheers Bomber.
I think we’d be good for Vela, as he would be for us, because of the brand of football we play.
I thought Gudjohnsen must have been a figment of someone’s imagination as it sounded ridiculous!!
I couldn’t even think of a good, cheap, striker who could score 15 goals in a season who would be available.
Any suggestions anyone??

We certainly need some additions in the striking department. I think Mr Moore is in the last chance saloon and if he does not buck his ideas up could be playing with his brother again in non league?

I think Mowbray’s reluctance to give Moore minutes on the pitch, even ahead of an Ishmael Miller badly lacking in confidence, would suggest he’s aware he may have made a mistake.
De Sutter is a full international so cannot be a bad player. Trejo came through the Boca Juniors youth system, but I’m sure he’s only scored 3 goals for Mallorca in about 30/40 appearances.
That said, both are described as promising players. I’ve read mostly that both are big, strong players who work hard for the team….similar to Bednar maybe? Would imagine both are technically good.

Trejo has played 5 times this season and hasn’t found the net yet – remind you of anyone ? ( Miller , Moore )…
De Sutter is an Anderlecht fan and Anderlecht want to sign him so that’s the end of that one.
Let’s hope TM is watching someone we don’t know about yet and maybe he can find another Zuiverloon !

de sutter is in the same mould as peter crouch, he even looks like him. trejo’s similiar in appearance to tevez, but he plays a drop off strikers role. his movement is very good and he’d link well with valero. when they played us in pre season, nobody could get near him. don’t think TM would get him in as a main striker, but he is an excellent prospect.

Get anybody who can score regular?,somebody said.I agree names don,t matter.I,m sure therr are lower division players who fit the bill.Iknow he let himself down in the most awfull way,but another Lee Hughes who would play his guts out for WBA.I don,t mean Hughes back at WBA but a similar player.

1) De Sutter was never a target. We watched him thats it.
Trejo is a playmaking striker like Tevez.

Nedball, cast your mind back to the last transfer window, SOTV stated we made a bid for Gudjohnsen bout 10m. Seemed he was interested but the deal could not be done in time.
Thinking of it where is SOTV?
