Current need for National Service
Wednesday 8th October 2008, 9:17AM BST.
How I agree with S. Lamberton on National Service, a recently published Letter of the Week.
Why National Service in the first place? Certainly not to change the younger generation for the better, although this was a byproduct.
The military needed to replenish men lost to them in WWII and when many others came back to their relieved homelands as heroes. The Metropolitan Police may also have needed to do this for similar reasons as you could also do National Service as a long-term Police Cadet.
Need for fuel and food meant coal-mining and farm-working were amongst other things counting towards National Service. Eventually, National Service had become merely a habit of government.
People running the forces would rather have concentrated on the nation’s defence. In 1960, the Conservatives were left with nothing but to abolish National Service.
S. Lamberton reminds us that equality demands women would also do National Service, but the recent phenomenon of girl-gangs shows why this would be a good thing.
S. Lamberton also warns of possible legal battles to have people excused National Service. With a good reason, such as further education, it was delayed, but only up to the age of 21.
History teaches us that any policy for today shouldn’t be taken straight off the peg of the past. For example, we may want it to start an earlier age than the 17 it used to be.
It also points towards a more suitable policy with the other things also counting towards National Service, not least long-term Police Cadet service. Taking us through recent history to today, there are the problems of not only attacks on the Police, but also on Paramedics, and the primitive fire-worship cult throwing at the Fire-Service.
The emergency services and other public services would be more understood by this difficult minority if they had to serve in them for long enough. It would also give the privileged a chance to understand how the other half live.
While there is nothing wrong with military service as an option, the emphasis should now be on working in the community rather than going to faraway countries of which most of us know little.

Not a bad idea. Not sure its affordable after yesterday, but still not a bad idea.
I can imagine ‘boy racers’ having to drive ambulances while the professional staff get on with keeping the injured alive. :)
Seriously, some form of service to the community can be made to work for many. Not all, but who is to say what difference it can make in individual lives.

Great idea as long as it’s not national service. Why should we throw our children into the wolfs den and fight someone elses war. Better they serve a good purpose on the home front working on british soil.

An excellent idea, and no greasing out of in on religious, political and lazy grounds either! We should and could all do our part in one form or another.

National service? More recruits to fight more dirty wars – fighting because they like a scrum and not because they have an inclination as to what they are actually fighting for. Defending a country who’s citizens are taxed to death, or bored to death listening to this wretched, gutless, self-loathing government who shudder at the mere thought of real patriotism.

If you want a pretty fair picture of what National Service was really like you should read John Sandalls’s new book: National Service Revisited. It’s serious and amusing. Available from John Sandalls at Locks Lane, Wantage, OX12 9DB (ISBN 978-0-9558411-0-1) price £9.99 plus £2 p&p. Also can be ordered from all good bookshops.

Putting kids in the army to defend their country is one thing but to put them in to fight a government and politically motivated war is another. If people really think afganistan is about beating terrorism they are most definately stupid. Our soldiers do a great job but it’s unfortunate that tehir lives are bieng wasted out there in a crap hole fighting for nothing!

Well said, Chris. I feel that the politicians, the bankers and the globalists are doing this simply to justify their position. There’s no way I would risk my life and those of others for their benefit. Ask yourself whether or not their policies are making the world a better place, or just creating an army of young, eager and ruthlessly mis-informed drones. The only thing I will fight for is free speach.

The best boot camp I ever saw was a thing called a family..a mother and father who were firm, loving and fair – not the two people I meet once in a while when the internet goes down, or the one’s who could not care less where their minors are of an evening. I am not trying to offend the offer, or the armed forces, but I think this problem is more complex than the solution offered.

The Armed Forces is not a correctional institute, it’s manned by highly professional dedicated men and women who have chosen to defend the rights what we believe in as British citizens. The idiots and thugs who are out of control and ignoring the basic rules of law will not benefit from some good old fashioned square bashing dished out by a retired drill sergeant. As a member of the RAF I for one would not want to train or trust one of these “National Servicemen”. I don’t not believe they would have the loyalty or the commitment to carry out the job diligently. I say most definately NO national service is not the way to make our streets safer from drunken youths or religious extremists.
