Race group stripped of £105,000

Tuesday 7th October 2008, 6:02PM BST.

A racial equality group in Wolverhampton has had its funding axed by the city council after being criticised for “basically doing nothing”.

Wolverhampton City Council is to pull £105,000-a-year for the Wolverhampton Race Equality Partnership, which started up in 2005. The group, which was based on a series of meetings between the community, the council and other service providers, has failed to provide details in recent months on what has been achieved so far.

Officers looking into its dealings also found its offices in Snow Hill regularly closed.

It is the second time controversy has hit an organisation of its type in the city.

The former Race Equality Council was disbanded in March 2003, after 35 years, with debts of £25,000 and its 14 employees made redundant. The decision to end the funding was made by the ruling Tory-Liberal Democrat alliance at a meeting of the cabinet last night, and was backed by the leader of the Labour opposition.

Councillor Jonathan Yardley, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and safer communities, said: “Our officers found the premises of the REP were constantly closed, they were basically doing nothing.”

This is one of many organisations in the city, supposedly in place for the betterment of the citizens of Wolverhampton, yet accomplishing nothing other than the milking of tax-payers money. I bet those from the Race Equality Partnership will not be required to pay back any of that money!

It would be good if there was a similar investigation into the ABCD (All Saint, Blakenhall Community Development) organisation. A friend of mine has shown me several emails from one of the local ward councillors and in one particular email he states, “the ABCD are only interested in their own pet projects and not what the people actually need or want”. The ABCD has had £53.5 million since 2001 to regenerate the All Saints, Blakenhall and Parkfields – yet you ought to see those areas! In the last 7 years (soon to be 8), the number of derelict / run-down buildings have at best remained untouched, and in some locations they have actually increased! Regeneration…..where?

Considering that there is another local ward councillor actually on the ABCD scrutiny panel, that things wouldn’t have continued they way they have for so long – he clearly sees nothing wrong with their activities!

Until there is proper, regular scrutiny of such organisations, we (the tax-payer) will continue to see very little reward for often substantial expense, and consequently continue to be ‘allowed’ to be robbed!

So over 3 years this group has wasted £315k of taxpayers money doing nothing.

Yet another expensive quango that has flourished under New Labour. For 3 years the Labour council have sat by and let this waste go on……and you wonder why your council tax has doubled under Labour?

Bravo ! About time. There must be a little list – and none of them will be missed- who should have their grants and subsidies withdrawn.

Another innacurate incorrect article. First of all REPW Office isn’t at all based in Snow Hill its in Chapel Ash, no wonder its always closed, you’re going to the wrong place. So if this article has got the most minor and basic detail wrong… says A LOT about the article as a whole.

This is a disgrace. Why not give the money to that poor tramp who lives on the ring road. He could use it to buy a nice little home to live out his days in. He would certainly appreciate it.
