Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Mother of democracy is a laughing stock
Tuesday 7th October 2008, 9:09AM BST.
Peter Rhodes’ point about bygone juries acquitting bread thieves when the alternative was hanging, is a sad reminder of our past failures with law and order.
I think people will come to regard with the same dismay, the failures of the last 11 years under this present government.
There seems to be an abundance of nit-picking rules and regulations when the more serious problems go untackled. Undue attention is paid to dropping sweet wrappers, not closing the bin, putting things in the ‘wrong’ bin, and woe betide anybody without a TV licence. On the other hand, muggings abound with no real deterrent, ASBOs are ignored with apparent immunity, and the fine for not insuring a car is less than the premium to insure it in the first place.
We have Gurhkas, a people of remarkable allegiance and loyalty to the Crown, refused entry for lack of ties to the UK, yet by the same standard we allow in all and sundry from Europe, again with no ties. They have never contributed one bean to this country and are able to enjoy a better standard of living than those who have paid in over a lifetime. No doubt the Government expects their vote.
We experience first hand the ‘European Arrest Warrant’ where a British citizen – Australian at Heathrow – is arrested on British soil, for what is not an offence is this country. Then again, after the treatment which was meted out to war hero Walter Wolfgang two years ago, this should come as no surprise. The mother of democracy is a laughing stock. I think in years to come, people will regard this same government with contempt, just as now we look back to 1880s when they hanged hungry people for stealing bread.

I cannot believe that Mr White is seriously advocating the return of hanging for bread theives. Anyone who resorts to risking everything for a humble loaf of bread must be in pretty dire straits. Why should they be killed just to satisfy his bloodlust?

I don’t see anyone doing anything about the state of democracy in Britain.
Parents rush to get their kids into anti-democratic Academy Schools, they don’t complain when Council’s privatise services, they don’t even turn out to vote.
Yes, democracy is in a pitiful state in the UK, but the average person on the street couldn’t give a toss. That’s the real problem, not whether we should hang people for stealing bread or not…

Mr White might care to remember that the Gurhkas were refused the right to remain in this country or to be paid a proper pension by Margaret Thatcher, despite expecting them to die for her in the Falklands. Blair wasn’t much better but at least he gave residency to those Gurhkas who served after they gave up their Hong Kong base in 1997. I only hope our MP for Redditch, The Home Secretary, recognises the sheer wickedness of continuing to block these wonderful people and their families from the same pension, healthcare and right of residency that anyone who’d lay down their lives for Britain deserves.
And one other thing, Mr White. There are more Britons living abroad than there are foreigners living here. If you are so determined to evict our European visitors – the vast majority of whom work and pay taxes, I hope you’re prepared to pay for the care of all those Brits who retired to Spain and must, under your rules, return to Blighty.

It’s democracy and privatisation thats responsible for the crap our banking sytsem is in at the moment(mainly private greedy hands) The fat cats have fed of us for far too long now and it’s come around in a full circle. Nationalise the banks and protect joe bloggs from the greedy scrotes of society. it’s these people that should be hanged because they legally steal alot more than a loaf of bread!

Neville Farmer, I would like to point out you that all of the Brits who chose to live and retire in another country …… you mention Spain …. but I chose Canada … a Commonwealth Country and worked and paid Taxes and subscription to Graduated Pension schemes for half a working lifetime in the UK and who are now denied Indexing of our meagre British Pension …… Plus I might add serving the Crown in Uniform for Six years…………

Rebecca, I wasn’t aware any schools were democratic. Is this something that your school specialised in? Or just something that other schools run better without?
