A shamed Midland footballer has been jailed for eight months for “putting the boot in” on a defenceless man.

Security cameras filmed Stafford Rangers striker Nick Wellecomme stamping twice on victim Richard Matthews outside a kebab shop. During the drunken brawl, Wellecomme’s brother Adam also kicked Mr Matthews.

Both brothers were jailed for eight months at Stafford Crown Court by Judge Simon Tonking, who told them: “This was putting the boot in.”

Wellecomme, aged 24, of Burnhill Lane, Rugeley, and his brother, aged 22, of Smithy Lane, Stafford, both admitted a charge of affray. They also each admitted separate charges of assault causing actual bodily harm on Mr Matthews.

The judge heard how the violence erupted inside Al-Karims kebab shop in Newport Road, Stafford, on January 12 this year. The court showed Nick Wellecomme bringing his foot down twice on someone just out of camera.
