Mystery solved as old photos identified

wd3088752weddingphoto-1-pm.jpgGreat-grandmother Eunice Smith did not have to look far to solve the mystery of one of the photographs of six weddings and a funeral found in a Wolverhampton house – it was sitting on her dressing table.

The picture shows the 88-year-old and husband Lindon, 76, getting married at the New Testament Church of God in the city on June 10, 1964. Mrs Smith said: “I nearly died when my grand-daughter rang to say that our wedding picture was in the paper.”

The photograph was one of six found after the death of Nola Hunter in a Wolverhampton care home back in 1997.

They were shared between her children and most remained a mystery for over a decade.

Mrs Smith of Grosvenor Street, Heath Town, added: “It has always been one of my favourite pictures. It is a reminder of a very happy day. If I had the chance I would do the whole thing all over again.”

Her grand-daughter Rachel Sheldon, aged 24, of Bilston, said: “There was a stunned silence when I told them and then they dashed out to get a copy.”

Meanwhile, electrician Herbert Coward, aged 50, got a shock when he saw another of the pictures.

He saw himself in short trousers at the wedding of elder sister Laurel, now 64 and living in London, who tied the knot with Derek Walters, who died this year aged 65, at a Methodist church in London in 1965.

He and his brother Basil Coward, aged 60, of Bilston, were amazed to see themselves in the paper. Basil’s daughter Bridget Coward, aged 41, whose mother Lucy, now 60, is also in the photograph aged 16, spotted the article and told her relatives.

Basil said: “I can remember the day vaguely – it’s been a long time.”

Herbert Coward of Bushbury provided the link to Nola Hunter. Her late husband, also called Herbert, was a good friend of Mr Coward’s father Eli.
