Wulfrunian among the Swans

Wolverhampton-born Ashley Williams will be lining up at the heart of the Swans defence, completing a remarkable journey.

Williams started in the city before winding up at the Liberty Stadium via Albion, Hednesford and Stockport, from where he moved for £400,000 in May.

He said: “My parents grew up in Wolverhampton and I’m from there, so it makes it a special game. As soon as the fixtures came out, Wolves was the first team I looked out for.

“When I signed for Swansea, I remember going back to Tamworth in the summer. I talked to a lot of people and they were talking about Wolves. They’re very passionate about their club and they were delighted we won League One to reach the Championship.

“They told me they hoped myself and Swansea enjoy a good season, but I couldn’t score against Wolves – they probably wouldn’t forgive me for that!

“I guess it will be a little strange for my parents supporting the team playing Wolves. They will be cheering me on. Whoever I’m playing against they will support me first.”

The 24-year-old Welsh international is wary of Wolves’ five-goal marksman Sylvan Ebanks-Blake – but admits he is also well aware of Sam Vokes from their time together with Wales.

Williams said: “Ebanks-Blake is scoring for fun and Sam Vokes – who I know a lot about – may come in as Iwelumo is suspended,. Sam is a younger version of him.

“Sam has impressed when he’s played for both Wolves and Wales. He’s such a big lad and makes it hard for defenders to mark him.”
