Wolves swoop for loan winger

Thursday 2nd October 2008, 11:20AM BST.

wd3081915.jpgWolves have agreed a deal to sign Sunderland winger Carlos Edwards on a three-month loan.

The 29-year-old was due at Compton today to complete the transfer today to train with his new-mates in readiness for Saturday’s trip to Swansea.

Molineux boss Mick McCarthy acted quickly after losing wingers Michael Kightly and Matt Jarvis to capture Edwards, whose only action this season has been against Liverpool in the Premier League and in the Carling Cup against Northampton.

Jarvis is out for two months with a torn hamstring, while Kightly’s absence will be considerably less as he has a strained hamstring.

Edwards, who is predominantly right-sided and quick, will be seen as a key signing to cover the absence of either.

Signed by Roy Keane for £1.4m from Luton in January 2007, he was an important player for the Black Cats during their promotion season of 2006-07, playing 15 games in the second half of the campaign as they swept to the title.

But his Premier League experience has so far been a frustrating one.

Having missed the first half of last season with a hamstring injury, he then broke his leg against Derby in December and was sidelined again.

But he is completely fit again now and will see the chance with Wolves to prove himself.

This season he has been kept out by Steed Malbranque and occasionally El Hadji Diouf, but is certainly a dangerous performer at Championship level.

Capped 61 times by Trinidad and Tobago, he played in the last World Cup in Germany. He came to Britain in 2000 when he signed for Wrexham along with Hector Sam and Dennis Lawrence, costing £125,000.

I understand people calling for the young lads, and I myself would like to see what the likes of Elliott Bennett could do with his speed down the flank. However in the situation we are in now, where we need to keep the momentum, we cant rely on players like Bennett, Gobern or Jones who are in opinion players with lots of potential, but not players who can boost a team like Kightly and Jarvis.
Edwards has what it takes at Championship level, and his style of play will make sure Mick doesnt have to change the tactics much.

I wish these idiots would stop with their “Oh…another ex-Sunderland player” rubbish! Carlos Edwards was signed by Keane not McCarthy, he has a proven record in this division from both his Sunderland and Luton days.

If idiots like Bob Wolf (38) had actually seen him play, I’m sure they wouldn’t be saying stuff like “Does he scout anywhere else?”. I think it is fairly obvious he does considering the likes of Kightly, Jarvis, Ebanks-Blake haven’t played for Sunderland before.

Then again Bob Wolf is probably one of the “fans” who slated the team and McCarthy for Wednesday night’s performance when we were simply outplayed by a better team that had done their homework.

It’s pessimistic imbeciles like the aforementioned Bob Wolf that gave so many players hell last year and saying “Freddy should be playing” instead of getting behind the players on the pitch. Look at Eastwood now? Hardly setting the world alight is he?

So here’s a noble idea Bob Wolf instead of going “Muppet doesn’t scout anywhere else”, why don’t you actually get behind Edwards? If you can’t do that, go and support your beloved Freddy Eastwood at Coventry!

    Wolves for Ever N,B

Carlos Edwards is excellent loan signing, seen him play for Luton and Sunderland, great player if fully fit.My Team for Saturday at Swansea would be
    Hennessey, Stearman,Collins,Shackell,Ward or Friend. Foley,Henry,David Jones,David Edwards.
    E-Banks Blake,Vokes.Subs:- Ikeme,Carlos Edwards,
Friend,Gray,Keogh.I though Kevin Foley played really well Tuesday Night and put over some great crosses and his not afraid to shoot at goal,in my opinion,I think he should be tried at right wing, and try David Edwards on the left Wing.
UP THE WOLVES 2-0 WIN SATURDAY

    To all wolves fans

All these comments from Albions fans is because we have started so well. 22 points from 27 is a far better start than there side of world beaters last season.

Dont rise to the bait just ignore them.

Its jelousy that TM willl be off to boro before xmas, and Robson will be drafted in to pick up the pieces. They have gone intom the season with a worse strikeforce than last season and a defence despite all the new signings looks as stable as the american economy

55 SE, why you want us to sell Dave Edwards?? 2 on form players are keepin him out, your sarcastic comment doesn’t make sense. What is all this, ‘let’s play keogh on the right’? WHY! he has no pace, and struggles to lift the ball off the ground.

Delighted with our short term acquisition, he has a knack of scoring vital goals, something even Matty J doesn’t possess. can’t wait til Saturday.

Oh and congrats big Chris, you’ve earned it, please don’t get injured!

Last year we were the best “football” team in the CCC as manager after manager kept saying. No wonder MAD MICK WANTS” TO DO AN ALBION” AND REMEMBER IT’S HOW MANY POINTS YOU’VE GOT IN MAY THAT COUNTS

Wow, I am starting to become a Mick McCarthy fan! Ouch, that hurt!

Rather than repeat last seasons dire winter he has got us a quality left winger! At last I can live with his thinking!

Although he will never be a natural winger, we can move Ward onto the left wing and start playing Friend where we bought him to play.

Suddenly, I like the idea of us having Ward. Not the best in any situation, but adequate in most. However, his slow pace still worries me as well. However, I think that is out best starting combination. And I think that it might be effective as long as we have two go attacking player up front.

    'You've Let Us Down'

We’re all so deluded. We brought into the lie that we are good enough to compete with the big boys, we brought into the lie that we have a squad capable of competing, we brought into our manager saying he wanted us to play like WBA and emulate them.

Why oh why did Mick raise my hopes that ‘this was our year.’ Why oh why do we always implode? Why oh why do we all turn on the manager and the team? Why oh why did my old man raise me to be a Dingle?!

Another horrible season is in the offing…we’ll capitulate as usual and slip down into the play offs and probably further now our only decent player is injured (again!) whilst WBA secure Premiership survival. God I’m so envious :(

I hate you MicMac, you know what you’ve done? YOU’VE LET US DOWN…AGAIN!

    I’ve ironed my banner already…

See this why the Albion fans call you laughedatwolf! You’re so deluded it’s borderline embarrassing! Wolves would turn Albion over now LOL! Never heard such rubbish in my life!

Edwards is a good signing though, as long as he gets back to full fitness pretty quick then you’ve got a very good championship player on your hands. He wouldn’t get anywhere near our team mind ;)

God I’d love to get Wolves in the cup…easy easy easy last time and we’d smash you again this year! It’s a no contest really!

Agreed that Kightly’s better than Brunt but Morrisson isn’t really a winger so you can’t include him in that analysis really. But then again look who I’m talking to, you know nothing about football laughedat!

Bob, I have been to the Molineux, I’ve only missed around 10 home matches in the last 16 seasons. If you don’t believe me come and see me in the Billy Wright T 131. I have only had the season ticket since that stand was built.

Getting the day of the match wrong was a mistake, I’m suspecting you never make them especially considering your ridiculous “Mick never scouts anywhere else” comment.

Lecture me all you want, but you are the retard starting the McCarthy bashing again after one defeat and signing an ex-Sunderland player. Maybe you should start campaigning for Mick out and your beloved Freddy back? Jog on idiot!

The type of sanctimonious rubbish being posted by happy-clappers defies description.

It was the Realists posting their disquiet and intelligent suggestions that Mick admitted were right.

The silly plonkers who were telling everybody who was not a happy clapper to go and support the Unmentionales just proved how little intelligence and football experience they have. Mick agreed with the Realists and not the limited happy-clappers :o)

Mick has adopted all the things that the Realistics were asking for last season, where are there Boo-boy postings? I can’t see any, I just see stupid postings attacking non-existent boo boys!

Now if I want to comment about a particular player and how he performed in the last game, that is not being a boo-boy – it is what supporters have done in our Black Country pubs for a hundred years.

Happy-clappers, please stop continually demonstrating your lack of intelligence! TGhe time has come to unite behind our team!
