Litterbugs turning us into the dustbin of Europe
Thursday 2nd October 2008, 7:09AM BST.
I love my city of Wolverhampton but I am becoming more and more concerned about the large quantities of litter on its pavements.
I know that the local authority are trying hard to make people aware of the problem but I am also aware that if I try to walk the pavements I will not get far before I encounter discarded tin cans, empty crisp packets, dumped cigarette butts and pats of chewing gum – and these are just a few of the delights that greet me here, there and everywhere.
Have we become so used to living in a city where the streets are open-air storehouses for every type of unwanted litter that we no longer notice these unwanted elements of modern-day living? Are we so hardened to the sight of the street detritus that it no longer violates our sense of propriety? It hasn’t always been like this. As I was growing up in the 1940s and 50s, parents instilled into children the selfishness of dropping our rubbish for others to clean up. I remember that adults would tell children off if they were thoughtless enough to drop even a sweet wrapper.
Nowadays we are quick to warn our children about the dangers they might meet from strangers but we seem less interested in teaching them their own responsibilities.
Our local authority provides us with litter bins but do we use them? I cannot understand why the bins are not used more often, and why people are so selfish that they still throw their rubbish in the street.
It would seem obvious from studying street litter that much of the problem originated with the onset of “fast food” outlets. Yet the many burger bars, kebab shops and mobile takeaways have never been held to account. Is it not possible that, before planning permission is granted for such outlets, a condition is placed on the owners to keep streets clear of their rubbish?
They should be obliged to send out staff to pick up discarded packaging or receive a bill for the cleaning up by an outside agency. Then again, why do we not ban the non-biodegradable plastic bags like they do in Italy? Walk through Bilston on any market day, and you will see plastic and paper bags flying through the air like demented kites.
If countries like France, Germany and Italy can offer us clean and tidy streets, why should we lag behind? Do we really want to be called the dustbin of Europe? Do we really want to become a breeding ground for rats and other vermin? I am sure we do not, so let us all become bothered about litter, and in the words of our city council “Bin It!”

Some 5 years ago visiting my mother-in-law in Wolverhampton, we were driving along the development in Merry Hill and watched a lady get out of her car, drop litter on the pavement and then walk up to the house, open the door and walk in. This type of person has trashed Wolverhampton. Walking round the city, the pavements are filthy, no one seems to have pride in the area. Once upon a time, it was a good place to live, until the Council became more concerned with ‘their jobs’ than doing the job they were paid to do by their employers, the Council Tax payer of Wolverhampton.
The answer isn’t clearing out the Councillors, it is cleaning out the employees of the Council who have no idea how to work, how to manager or how to get results for their bosses – YOU.

I was taught to not litter, and if i were to accidentally, i would feel so guilty for it anyway.

I actually think Sandwell is worse. You also have a very large population density and a government that is more interesting in ‘environmental’ tax than actually doing anything about the real clprits (a lot of fly-tippers are never prosecuted). I saw Wolvo on the BBC news the other night and it was a sorry sight; I kid you not I actually thought it was some run-down area of say, East London or The Bronx. But if you think that’s bad..visit Sandwell.

Oh, and look at the mess left in Iraq..do you seriously expect them to care about Wolverhampton? Perhaps if you dump your rubbish the proper way they might, especially with the 400% hike in waste disposal services..

no 3 How can you possibly blame the council for litter? Are the employees going out at night and throwing the stuff onto the streets. It’s all about personal responsibility, Unfortunatly too many people just don’t give a toss and are either too lazy to take the stuff home or just too stupid to realise that they are living in a pig sty.

The city hasn’t changed, it’s the people in it.

ref litter- no wonder there is litter, when the genius at the council, who thought up this ridiculas white plastic bag idea, with no means of fastening it? before the now( 7 MEN and TWO LORRYS ), come to empty it, the wind / rain. dogs. cats/ can all pick at it, and scatter it about anywhere, and the local kids who just kick it over for the fun of it, what i want to know is who is going to pick it all up.? the men when they come, YEH RIGHT, it will be left to blow all round the street. so adding to the local litter problem. WELL DONE GENIUS. “” i wonder how much it has cost us ratepayers for this latest little fiasco ?

I SUGGEST YOU FIND OUT WHERE YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLOR LIVES AND DUMP YOUR RUBBISH ON THEIR FRONT GARDEN
THESE ARE THE IDIOTS WHO VOTED FOR THIS SYSTEM SO THEY SHOULD BE DOING SOMETHING TO CLEAN UP OUR DISGUSTINGLY FILTHY STREETS.
I AM SO ANGRY
