Bid to tackle teenager pregnancy
Thursday 2nd October 2008, 6:43PM BST.
Free contraception could be offered to youth clubs in Wolverhampton to try to slash the number of teenage pregnancies in the city.
A hard-hitting report has been penned by Wolverhampton City Council saying more must be done to tackle problems of gymslip mums in the area.
Various suggestions have been made including calls for an extensive study of what sex education is offered by schools in the city.
Another was that schools should be encouraged to develop a Sex and Relationships Education policy (SRE) working in conjunction with council officers.
A review group has provided the series of recommendations for the council. These include giving out free condoms to youth clubs.
The report was endorsed by the city council’s cabinet last night, allowing officers to start talks with schools on how to help cut the teenage pregnancy rates.
Figures showed the rate of teenage pregnancies in Wolverhampton was consistently higher than regional and national rates.
