Baggies faithful urged to play part
Thursday 2nd October 2008, 3:47PM BST.
Albion boss Tony Mowbray today urged Albion’s fans to roar them to another win against Fulham on Saturday – and insisted they cannot afford to get complacent.
On paper the Cottagers present the Baggies with their easiest home test of the season so far but Mowbray insists his side cannot expect a win in any game this season.
“I would hope the fans are just vociferous in their support of the team at every home game,” he said.
“They have been so far and I’m pretty sure they will be as the season moves on.
“Hopefully there is no apathy among them where they just come and expect because we’re not good enough as a group yet to expect against any team in this league.
“They’ve all got players who can hurt us. We need to all pull together and that includes the fans.
“If we’re not pushing together and stretching every sinew to make sure we get the result then we will be in trouble because it is a maximum effort every week to try and grind out results.”
And Mowbray is hoping memories of a harrowing defeat can help inspire captain Jonathan Greening – the only Albion survivor of the 6-1 defeat in the last meeting between the clubs in February 2006.
“It’s not a nice experience to get heavily beaten in your career,” said Mowbray. “It means you find that extra percentage or stretch that extra inch to get to the ball.
“On the other side of the coin, potentially the game can be too big in your mind if you’re not careful.
“Then you don’t relax and play your normal match if there is too much going on in your mind.
“The message for our team would be to go and play our game and relax because we’re at home.
