Carson relaxed over England call
Wednesday 1st October 2008, 3:07PM BST.
Albion keeper Scott Carson insists he will not be waiting by the phone for an England recall on Sunday – but he reckons he is in the right form for an international return.
Carson’s early season form has put him in the frame for a recall to Fabio Capello’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Belarus.
Yet the goalkeeper insists he remains relaxed over his England prospects.
He said: “If it’s going to be it’s going to be, so I won’t be losing any sleep over it. My main priority is West Brom but to be selected for England would be a massive achievement.
“You normally have a bit of contact from the FA and I haven’t had that for a bit so we’ll have to wait and see.
“If the call comes I’ll be delighted but I’m not going to get too disheartened if it doesn’t.”
Carson’s last appearance for England was his ill-fated full debut in the European Championships qualifying defeat to Croatia at Wembley 10 months ago.
He last figured in a squad in February when England beat Switzerland 2-1 in Capello’s first match at the helm.
Some fine performances for the Baggies and an injury to Blackburn’s Paul Robinson could open the door for a return.
Carson, speaking during a visit to The Kids Orchard Centre in Lye, reckons his £3.25m move to The Hawthorns has helped him rediscover his form.
He said: “I feel really sharp. I have felt pretty good since I have come here, worked really hard and I feel like I’m in decent form. But it’s in someone else’s hands.
“This season is very much the same as last season. There are a handful of good young English goalkeepers all in the Premier League and that hadn’t been the case for a good few years.
“Hopefully keeping is on the rise and that’s great. The more good young keepers there are who are capable of playing for England the better it is because you have to do better to get in.”
