Albion blog: New boys take credit

Tuesday 30th September 2008, 11:28AM BST.

wd2901297albion-8-dh-3.jpgAs we staggered away from Loftus Road with the Championship trophy sticking out our back pocket we all agreed our defence would need to be over hauled for the Premier League, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.

Mowbray duly obliged and invested in no less than one new keeper and five new defenders.

Saturday witnessed yet another defensive debut when Donk replaced the out of form Barnett, which made the rear guard performance even more impressive.

Carson was outstanding and I keep thinking back to the day we signed him, Ray wbaforever Blood stated he was worth at least 10 points across the season (blooming know it all), although the points total may already need re-assessing!!!!

Donk was steady; Olsson not only defended for his life, but as seen with the goal will cause opposing defences problems from set pieces.

But special mention must be reserved for Zuiverloon.

Facing arguably one of the best left wingers the Premier League offers (especially at home) he never looked anything other than comfortable at just over £3million he already looks an absolute steal.

Yes I agree that at times we rode our luck, but how many times have teams come to the Hawthorns and done that to us??

Everton and to some degree Villa returned home with three points after the football gods denied us the rub of the green.

Big Ish continues his Premier League learning curve as he incurred the wrath of his manager and no doubt his fellow team mates. After some fantastic build up play he twice failed to square the ball for certain goals, electing to shoot instead. But lets not be too hard on him, after all he did set up the winner and it was his introduction into a 4-4-2 formation which opened the game up.

The only downside to Saturday’s game was the injury to Kim.

We wait to hear how serious the injury is, early reports from the Albion physios is that the knee did not swell up as badly as first feared but await the scan results to confirm the extent of the damage.

With Clement, Meite, and Kim injured and Texeira still completing his rehabilitation from long term injury Mowbray for once must be looking forward to an international break.

But first we face Fulham and the return of a certain Mr Zoltan Gera.

Signing off from a happy Albion blogger!!!

Is Andy Johnson suspended for the Fulham game? That’s probably good news for us…

Zuiverloon versus Gera is going to be great to watch.

Gera normally plays on the right of midfield which means he will lock horns with Robbo, still interesting though.
Oh and yes Johnson is suspended.

    Good blog Jarrod.

I heard something riduculous yesterday, someone actually said why do we not put Olssen in the holding midfield role to give us the steel in front of the defense, my answer to that was for ages we have moaned about the state of our defense and now it’s right certain people want to disrupt that……there’s no pleasing some, i for one think we have made some great signings and barring the odd lapse our defense has been twice the defense it was last season.

Roll on Saturday and here’s hoping for another 3 points to propel us nicely into the top half of the best league in the world.

the new boys have been superb
like i said after the villa game
barnett needed to be left out
as it looked like his confidence was low
    after giving both goals away
    donk was a great replacement
lets not forget that was 4 out of 5 the at the back who were new and we defended for our lives and will only get better as the season goes on.
gutted for kim he was looking good but good to see texty back soon which is like a new signing.
fingers crossed for 3 points on saturday and looking forward to robbo kicking gera into row z
    come on you baggies

bomber, great blog mate, like you i can only marvel at T.M.’s ability to find real class acts for relatively little money. He really seems to have surpassed himself with zuiverloon, although ive just read that Man u are eyeing him up. We said on the fans forum that his acquisitions for the defence were looking good, and as they gel it really can only get better. As we gain points you feel the confidence growing through out the club, and really believe that there are not only 3 clubs that will finish beneath us, but probably a few more. cant wait for saturday, Gera should get a warm welcome but lets send him home knowing he made a massive mistake. baaagggggggggggiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeesssssssss

    Hi Hilltop,

Im usually sceptical when Manu are linked to a player, but with right back being their problem position there might be an element of truth to this one. £15million would be my starting price, Bale went to Spurs for £12million didnt he??

bomber, sorry mate and i thought you were a business man. Not a penny less than 20 million, and rooney in return. Maybe we can regenerate another english internationals flagging career.

I thought you should be aiming for 4 points from these 2 games with an away draw and victory over Fulham. You now have the chance for a fantastic 6 but if you only draw you should still be pleased with the progress you seem to be making. I will be interested to see what sort of reception Gera gets following the abuse aimed at Davies.

Great sentiment mate, but sadly, even if we stuffed them 6-0, i don’t think he’d think he’d made a mistake once he’d returned home to count his “spare change”! Unfortunitly, thats how it is with players nowadays, although to be fair, Gera is made to look like a saint by some of em!

Thats not to say i won’t enjoy sending him back to the smoke with nothing but a bruise or two from mad dog Robbo! ;-)
