Office blocks scheme at M54 site
Sunday 28th September 2008, 11:26AM BST.
A £7.5million hotel and business park could be built overlooking the M54 in Wolverhampton within the next year.
Two office blocks planned for the site would hold 400 workers and the 63-bedroom hotel would create 30 jobs.
Coven-based family business ASK Developments Ltd is currently in detailed talks with an undisclosed mid-range hotel chain to take on the premises. The Treetops development would be built at Stafford Road’s junction with Junction 2 of the M54. A planning application has been lodged.
Wolverhampton City Council planners are expected debate the scheme on December 2.
David Kay, managing director of ASK Developments, said today planning permission was secured for the hotel two years ago and was still active.
He said: “We will look at starting work as soon as planning permission for the entire development is secured and it would take around eight months to build the hotel.
“It is a good area with excellent transport links and a strong demand for premises such as this.
“We want to buck the trend and remain positive at a time when there is such a lot of negativity around.
“It would be seen from the M54 and is the first thing people would see when they come into the city.”
The main office building would be four storeys high and cover 37,000 sq ft. It would be able to house around 275 workers. The second, which could hold 125 admin staff, would cover 1,670 sq ft and be three storeys high.
Wolverhampton City Council wants a decision made by December 12. Due to the size of the development, it will have to go before the planning committee. The site, owned by ASK Developments, is currently used to store commercial vehicles.
It is close to the planned i54 business park being created on Wobaston Road, Fordhouses, but the two are not linked. Separate plans are currently also going through the system by Cannock-based Pritchard Holdings to also build a hotel in Stafford Road as part of its proposed Citygate Plaza complex.
