Past pupils from Whitgreave Primary shared their memories over old black and white photographs of their school days.

Current youngsters got into the spirit of the day by donning traditional clothes from the 1930s and performing wartime songs for the older students, some of whom took to the floor to dance.

Invited guests included parents, former pupils, teachers and governors who poured over old photographs and chatted about yesteryear.

Ex-pupils who found snapshots of themselves included Helen Drakeford, who discovered a picture of herself in 1953 with her school trophies, and Richard Williams, who spotted himself as a young mascot posing with the 1956 football team.

Assistant headteacher of the school Jo Hemmings said around 150 people had attended the event.

“It was the school’s 80th birthday and all of the children dressed up in 1930s clothes,” she said. “We had around 150 parents and governors and past pupils as well as people from the local community.

“There were people who had been to the school when it very first opened.

“The children entertained them with songs from the 1930s and some of the older people got up and danced. Everybody really enjoyed it.”

The school has retained the name it had when it first opened but the buildings and campus have changed dramatically over the past eight decades.

A new children’s centre is due to open on the school site next month.

The £320,000 project has seen work carried out to spruce up the primary school including creating a new staff room.
