Police sources say a murder inquiry could be launched after the 59-year-old was targeted following an argument.

Detectives believe trouble flared between a group of men which resulted in the victim being mowed down.

Officers were quizzing residents in Banstead Close, All Saints, today.

The street remained sealed off this afternoon following the tragedy, which happened at around 5.15am. Also closed was Kent Road at its junction with Bradley Road and Major Street.

Police spokeswoman Catherine Preece said this afternoon: “As a result of the altercation, a car was driven at a 59-year-old man, during which he sustained serious injuries.

“He was taken to New Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The vehicle involved in the collision failed to stop at the scene and inquiries continue.”

She added the man’s family had been informed and a formal identification and post mortem were due to take place.

Residents have been warned the cul-de-sac could remain closed until tomorrow while forensic officers search for clues. One woman who was due to travel to Devon today was waiting to hear if police would make an exception for her.

Any witnesses to the hit-and-run can call police on 0845 113 5000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
