Red tape forces out school crossing man
Friday 26th September 2008, 11:39AM BST.
A school crossing warden in Penkridge forced to give up his post because of benefits rules says red tape is putting children’s lives at risk.
John Van Der Wyke, who has an artificial leg, was forced to quit his patrol near the junction of Bellbrook Road and Teddesley Road, because he earned £14 more than the £20 a week allowed before his disability benefit is affected.
He offered to do it for free but was told he has to earn the minimum wage or he wouldn’t be insured and the county council has no plans to employ a new warden there despite Mr Van Der Wyke and parents saying it is dangerous.
The 52-year-old, whose remaining knee is worn out, was physically able to perform the role as he was only required for eight hours a week.
Under the permitted work scheme for those on disability allowance, he can work for 12 months but then has to make the job permanent, which can only happen if he works full-time hours, or quits for a year before coming back, which he has done since 2003.
Mr Van Der Wyke, of Teddesley Road, said: “It’s a terrible situation. I want to work. I like the job so much I offered to do it for free.
“I only worked three days this term before having to give it up. On my last day a child said to her mum, ‘I love that crossing man’. It brought a tear to my eye and I didn’t have the heart to say I wasn’t coming back.
“Despite it being classed as a category C crossing, it is dangerous and it seems it will take a nasty accident before anything is done.”
Parents of pupils at Marshbrook and St Michael’s first schools and Penkridge Middle School have contacted Mr Kidney, county councillor Veronica Downes and Penkridge Parish Council to lobby county bosses to re-instate a crossing patrol. But county council spokesman Tom Hobbins said the patrol would not be replaced.

“he has to earn the minimum wage or he wouldn’t be insured”
So are work experience students not insured? That can’t be right?

I agree with “Nice but Dim”, the terminology is incorrect – WE Students are insured, arent they?
DWP & the council have put a man out of work although that is all he wants to do.
All i ask is that DWP & the council read this article and think about that childs comment ” I love that crossing man” – a hearting story to her that that comment not just made him smile but brought a tear to this mans eye.

Typical absurdity of the Labour system! After he gives up the job, they’ll probably claim he doesn’t want to work too!! When the DWP should be applauding people like Mr Van Der Wyke and giving them the extra support they need.

What is the cost of a childs life?
A few pounds over £14…pathetic.
How many people want to do or will get off their back sides in all weathers to do that job?
I think he should be allowed to do that job, keeping all his benefit he’s hardly going to grow a new knee is he? So permantly disabled doing something he loves, the children are safe with him. They know and trust him,my god who makes these pathetic rules.
Leave him be!!!

No one said he had to give the job up – he could have stopped claiming benifit since he could actually work, or would you posters rather your tax went up to keep paying people on benifits to do nothing???????? Whats this got to do with labour anyway?? Do you want a system where there is one rule for one and another for another – the system opens up for abuse and then you’ll be moaning about that too??? But then the Conservatives probably would increase taxes so maybe this is what no.3 wants?

If he is earning £14 too much why on earth can’t they just cut his benefit to compensate for that.

To South_Bank_Wolves: Not at all! But I’d appreciate a more sensible approach that works for everyone! I blame Labour, as they’ve been in power for the last decade. Like it or not, they’ve radically changed the way many public services are run. In almost all cases, making them far less efficient and more wasteful of taxpayers money! Taxes have been increasing under Gordon Brown’s supervision all that time! Conservatives want to cut taxes – not further increase them!
