Joy of text does it for Edwards
Monday 22nd September 2008, 2:45PM BST.
Former Wolves defender Rob Edwards has revealed how the joy of text from his ex-Molineux team-mates helped him do his old mates a favour.
Blackpool’s record £275,000 signing was man of the match as he marshalled the Tangerines to a superb 1-0 win at Wolves’ Championship rivals Birmingham on Saturday.
Defeat for Blues and victory for Wolves at Preston saw Mick McCarthy’s men climb three points clear at the top, while they are five points clear of third spot.
The 25-year-old, who moved to Bloomfield Road this summer after four years at Wolves, reckons he is owed a few favours from his one-time Wolves colleagues now.
He said: “Several of the Wolves lads sent me messages before kick-off asking me to help do them a favour. With Wolves and Birmingham sharing the Championship lead at that stage, I guess they are all suddenly in my debt.
“They owe me a few drinks, that’s for sure. We deserved this win, not least for the way we battled. If we can win here, we can win anywhere!”
As a former Villa as well as Wolves player, Edwards likes beating Blues.
Even the utility man believes the St Andrew’s crowd were being hard on their team when they booed them off.
“I’m not trying to have a go at them because they’re a good bunch of supporters.
“They do get behind their team, but it was obvious they were expecting to beat us and they were disappointed.
“But the players need them on their side. I know they were expecting to win, but to be goalless at half-time is still not a bad result.
“Of course, they pay their money and they have the right to voice their opinions, but I don’t think they should be booing at that stage.”
