Iwelumo expects to play City
Monday 22nd September 2008, 11:38AM BST.
Wolves’ hat-trick hero Chris Iwelumo expects to have his red card against Preston rescinded for him to face Bristol City on Saturday.
Preston defender Sean St Ledger told referee Martin Atkinson there was no contact, after the pair were involved in a head to head clash off the ball.
Wolves had until 1pm today to decide whether to appeal the decision.
Iwelumo’s sending off was one of three dismissals for Wolves, with boss Mick McCarthy and Wayne Hennessey also given their marching orders to mar the magnificent 3-1 win.
The incident resulted in the eight-goal striker’s first red card of his career, but he insists he was the innocent party and fully expects the decision to be overturned.
Iwelumo said: “We’re looking forward to playing Bristol City and I’ve got full confidence I’ll be involved in that match. I’ll be buzzing if it gets rescinded.
“I was devastated, because I’ve never had a red card. I’ve only had about eight yellow cards in my whole career, it’s not in my nature.
“I just stood over him (St Ledger) and he stood up. He made a little move towards me, caught my nose and I fell. He lashed out and I was like ‘what are you doing?’
“As soon as he made contact with my nose and fell, I was thinking ‘what’s he done here?’ It’s killed me.”

The referee clearly go this decision wrong and should be man enough to admit his mistake!
Incidently he did make several more mistakes in a very poor overall performance; I have written to Keith Hackett expressing my concerns and will post his reply, if I receive one

must admit the ref has this wrong. I looked at my mate at half time and said because of all the home chants at the ref, Wolves wouldnt get anything in the second half. I said I wouldnt be suprised if there was a penalty. Its ok the Preston fans saying there was a handball in the box in the first half but we had 2 men harshly sent off, one of which ridiculously. Kind of evened it out a bit. We were the better team with 10 men too!!

Not being funny Chris, but you went down like you had been shot by a sniper!
They both went down like they were shot..Playing devils advocate, surely the pair of them should be punished for ‘simulation’…..
I agree with wolvesmod. If no contact was made, why did Iwelumo go down like he was shot. Ronaldo whould’ve been impressed. At the risk of getting slated, if Iwelumo was play acting he deserves punishment for that, I dislike the amount of play acting that goes on in modern football, it’s embarrassing. Even more so when it’s one of ours.
Gut feeling tells me that this won’t be rescinded. We never get a break from officials!
We’ve managed to shrug off the injuries at the start of the season (actually we benefited from this since we strengthened the squad more than we might otherwise) and we can shrug this off. Onwards and upwards
Report abuse
Does anyone know if we are going to appeal both red cards or just the one for Chris? Also when will we know the outcome of the appeal by?
I agree, he went down like a sack of spuds, holding his face and then he tells the ref there was no contact?
This will not be rescinded, I’m more hopeful on Wayne’s.
I personally think that neither player should have been sent off. If Chris was sent off then Sean St Ledger should have been sent off too. But fair play to him for going to see the ref and lets hope it is rescinded. I thought also that Hennessy got the ball before the player and did not deserve to be sent off either and having watched it on television I still think the same.
If you watch the replay Iwelumo fell over after their guy. If your left standing your defently going off so fair play to go down. What was their player doing with his foot that high that deserved a straight red.
I can’t stand these players who get people sent off then off the pitch back the guy up. The know what they’re doing. One word for them:- Cheats!!!

Anyone know why the Bristol game is a 12.30 KO ?
Bristol kick off is 12.30 because of trouble btween the fans last season.
(12) Because of the trouble after the same fixture last season, on police advise it has been moved to a 12.30 Kick Off.

Because it kicked off Home and away vs Bristol City last season.
Apparently Hennessey is only having a ONE game ban. According to the other E+S article. Can anyone confirm? Thought it was 3 games for a straight red?
@12 Bristol City fans arrived early in town last year, causing a few problems.
There was contact. Iwelumo went down because St. Ledger stood up into his face. He would rather claim nothing happened at all, as that might help with the claim.
Not only that but St. Ledger while falling deliberately kicked out towards Iwelumo’s face. He should be red carded.
Iwelumo stood over St. Ledger and then St. Ledger stood into CI.
How can you not be hopeful on this and more hopeful on Hennessey’s? He brought down the man in the box and denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.
I notice all the muppetout idiots have mainly disappeared after our best start for 46.
You are a disgrace.
oh come one, the reason for replays and such is to get to the truth. the refs had a blinder and you are saying its the players who should be punished?
if you are going to punish Chris at St LEdger then you surely have to discipline the ref. he was pretty dire thru the entire game
Report abuse
The ref had a shocker, he was quick to send Hennessey off but nothing for their guy who almost took Kightly’s legs off for the penalty. I can’t see how they were any different, both denying goalscoring opportunities? As for Stearman’s ‘handball’, the ref obviously didn’t spot that Mellor punched the ball out of Hennessey’s arms.
Hennessey is not appealing his, I don’t think Iwelumo will get off having seen it at the time and since. The ref was itching to give them a decision after the abuse he took at half time. Preston need to have a long look at why they allow their fans to rush towards the tunnel and hurl abuse at the official and opposing players. No wonder they get so many penalties at home, as the ref knows he will have a walk within 6 inches of the home fans at the end of the game. Shocking.
was at the match on sat but could not understand why no action was taken against the player who put kites six foot in the air for the peno! surely this, based on the other decisions was also a sending off???? smacks of double standards to me! seems to be a weekend of poor refereeing by all accounts and begs the question whst are some of theses refs going to do next?

“I notice all the muppetout idiots have mainly disappeared after our best start for 46.”
The fans concerned haven’t vanished, they are supporting the team! McCarthy patched up his differences with the fans when he admitted publicly that we were right to give him stick after last seasons performance.
Logically, that means that Mick thinks those who didn’t give him stick don’t know anything about football :o)
OUT OF DARKNESS HAS COME LIGHT!

the ref’s always right even when he is wrong!

In the spirits of the game and with grit and determination should the match be. Let not the game be coloured by bad play and cheating.
It’s a beautiful game and let it be so.

Consistency is what is needed on the Hennessey front. Watch the Championship highlights and see Neil Sullivan, Doncaster keeper, taken down a striker with the Doncaster fullback running to cover the goa (as did Foley) and Sullivan stays on the field!!!!
I think it was a terrible decision but dont worry wolves fans we beat both charlton and crystal place without him
Report abuse
Did anyone see the Bristol City goalie hack down that Doncaster player, that was worst and he only got booked!!!!!!
Iwelumo’s card is being appealed, but Hennessey’s isn’t according to the Wolves website.
If they didn’t touch why did both go down like Frank Bruno. Both should recieve yellow cards but you can’t blame the ref, both tried to get the other sent off and sadly Chris payed the price.
Will be a miss this weekend better shape with him in the team.
Don’t think it was a red but he should have stayed on his feet, the big girls blouse. Both players typify todays “childish” behaviour of most pro footballers. You see them hit the deck for the slightest of reasons – it is one part of the game that really annoys me.
But really and truly both Chris and Henno should never have got themself into the situations that led to the red cards – we had the game wrapped up. And how much exactly is the clean sheet bonus? it must be sizeable for Henessey to want to protect it that much.
Also on a more light-hearted note – may I say a big wolves welcome to Jason Shackell…our new reserve goalie. listen mate, this is wolves, u can be put in ANY position at ANY time, good that you have started as you mean to go on,lol.

Ref Iwelumo:
Why was no action taken about St Ledger’s two-footed kick into Iwelumo’s chest which started all that nonsense ? That was a sending off offense in itself. As to them both claiming there was no contact, their subsequent reactions suggest otherwise.
Whatever Iwelumo’s fate on this one, he should be made to sit in a corner wearing a dunce’s hat whilst writing 1000 lines ” I must refrain from aggressive posturing just because I am full of myself having scored a hat trick.”
Ref Wayne:
As an ex keeper I am reluctant to be overly critical, but, oh dear oh dear, lad.
Several points on this one. Under the stupid rules in place today, if a keeper goes to ground in the wrong circumstances he invites the forward to deliberately hook his foot and fall over. The situation an Saturday was not one for doing that. 3- 0 up with less than a minute to go, conceding a goal is no big deal.Come out as you did, no problem with that. But I would have only come to within a yard of the player, made myself a big space eater in the crouch position and mirrored the players movement. Getting sent off in this situation was stupid.
The red card, itself, was out of order based on the current rules, the John Terry incident last week and the Neil Sullivan incident on Saturday. Mellor was moving diagonally away from the goal whilst two defenders where tracking across, one of them was virtually on the goaline. It could not be construed as a goal scoring opportunity.
We should appeal this one.
Wayne, may I offer my services as your mentor?
The one sending off that was merited was the Mick’s. What a p***k ! !

31,
Bit over critical don’t you think???
What did you think McCarthy did wrong???
Having watched the highlights I can’t see what he did wrong.

Big Chris must have watch the video from when Bully smacked the lad at Leicester, Steve Walsh & then did the dying fly, quite comical really, if it gets overturned that is.

Jon It was actually the Doncaster keeper that hacked down Nicky Maynard of Britol City and yes he should have been sent off. Chris will be lucky to get his red card recinded they did touch heads and Chris was the one that moved forward.

Gracie ……. whether his actions were merely sarcastic, lacking in thought, or deliberately mischievous, is immaterial.
His actions were provocative and could have sparked unpleasant scenes in the crowd, which was in a very heated state at the time.

32 – Well said, Sir, I couldn’t agree more – where are all the MM / players / Happy clapper bashers ? Just you wait til we go on a bad run, they’ll be back in force then. We’ll have to start singing “where were you when we were good” !!
Grumpy Ole Man – You raise some interesting points. Must say I think you’re being a tad harsh on WH – he is after all very inexperienced. Yes, may be he shouldn’t have gone to ground so easily at that stage of the game, but he’ll learn from that, and as an ex keeper yourself, surely you must have been driven by keeping clean sheets ??
I think Steven Ward should have gone in goal. As he always quotes “I will play anywhere”. Striker, Left winger, Left Back….Goal Keeper seems like a natural progression.
It was clear from the video evidence that St Ledger was the instigator in the incident, at least he is man enough to own up for his part, I just hope the not always sensible FA do rule sensibly and overturn the card.
If there was no contact as St-Ledger say’s why did both players roll around on the floor as if they had been shot? They were obviously both trying to get the other player into trouble and should both be banned for ungentlemanly conduct. Its no good speaking out after the event.
