Workers fear job losses as firm moves

Saturday 20th September 2008, 10:24AM BST.

Scores of workers at a Smethwick manufacturing company are set to lose their jobs as production is moved abroad.

Around 60 workers from Flabeg Ltd in Crystal Drive Smethwick, some of who have worked for the company for 35 years, would go in a cost-cutting move.

The firm, which makes car mirrors, is in talks about transferring its Smethwick operations to the continent, with staff claiming a crunch meeting is expected at its German headquarters next week.

They say if the move goes ahead production will be moved to France, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

One worker, who did not wish to be named, said: “If they go ahead then we can expect redundancies before Christmas, with all the jobs to go by July next year.

Bosses from Flabeg Ltd were not available for comment.
