This is a time of continuing road congestion, with increasing train and tram use.

The Black Country and surrounding area is no exception. We already have a comprehensive network of railway trackbeds, most of which have been left disused (many through Dr Beeching’s axe).

We need to make this the spine of a fully integrated tram/train/bus network, if we’re not to cover ourselves in tarmac.  This is why I share Michael R J Crump’s disappointment at the demise of direct Wolverhampton-Walsall rail services and agree that we should write to our MPs.

Sadly, his letter wasn’t fully understood by J Saunders, who should have realised the reason for the low usage both he and I have witnessed.

The problem is that those who re-introduced direct Wolverhampton-Walsall services set them up for failure by their own dead hand. They did only half a job, by not replacing the stations at Willenhall, Darlaston and Pleck.

J Saunders believes that the vast majority of people prefer the convenience of bus services. What cannot be denied is that for the vast majority of people travelling between Wolverhampton and Walsall, bus services are not their preference but their only public transport option.

The transport authorities should try again, but this time with portable buildings and temporary platforms forming replacement stations and the odd new station for places such as Heath Town (at the junction with the proposed tram-line), to find out how successful this service really can be.

Over the years I have used Walsall station, including occasional trips to Wolverhampton, I have noticed something.
The Wolverhampton train is very quick compared to the bus. Bit when the train is late or cancelled, its a much slower journey by bus.

So for dependable service, I take the bus. Gets me to Wolverhampton on time most of the time, no waiting up to an hour for the next one.
If the train was more dependable, maybe I’d use it. But until then I cannot afford to be late.

Are you sure tram use is increasing? The last I read was that use of the Birmingham – Wolverhampton tram line is down 5% on last year’s figures.

The cost of rail, tram,,and bus travel is still a higher cost than car travel. Why should we use these services when there is no encouragement to do so.

Chris, don’t know where you are travelling from or to but in my area, Walsall, bus fares are quite a bit cheaper than car use.
Never mind parking charges once I get to where I’m going.

Bus pas of £10.45 a week for unlimited travel within a certain area. Or even just a daysaver of £3.

Rail travel, been to London and back for £21 last year. Excluding congestion charge, car travel would have cost me more than that.

Sometimes the car will be cheaper. Sometimes other methods will.
Depending on time of day, traffic, seat prices etc.

I find buses and trains intimidating. I don’t want to sit next to someone who smells of wee or has loud music playing
