Phantom joke sign mystery is solved

Friday 19th September 2008, 10:50AM BST.

The phantom responsible for joke street signs around Wolverhampton today revealed himself as an art technician in his 30s who had been planning the project for months.

The artist, who lives in Wolverhampton and would only say his name was Adam, said he had made the signs which appeared on routes including Stafford Road, Wednesfield Road and Compton Road to put a smile on the face of motorists.

The council yesterday removed the notices, which looked like official signs but contained statements such as ‘There are three kinds of people in this world’ then further along ‘Those who can count, and those who can’t’.

Today Adam said he had created the realistic-looking road signs using gloss paint on cardboard while the traffic font was downloaded off the internet.

Adam said photographs of the signs will be included in an exhibition at The Churchill Citizens’ Club, Warwick Road, Acocks Green, tomorrow from 10am-5pm.
