Nigel Reo-Coker today warned Villa must quickly come back down to earth from their Tottenham triumph and focus on delivering on the continent.
After navigating their way through the Intertoto Cup and UEFA Cup qualifying Martin O’Neill’s men will tomorrow finally compete in a proper European fixture for the first time in seven years.
Bulgarian side Litex Lovech will provide the opposition in the UEFA Cup first round first leg in what is Villa’s second of seven games in a hectic 21-day period.
They got off to the perfect start with a convincing 2-1 victory over Tottenham – but Reo-Coker, who scored his first Villa league goal in the game, insists they must now ‘move on’ and do the business in Bulgaria – ideally by bringing home an away goal. It was very important to get this run of fixtures off to a winning start,” said Reo-Coker. “It has also helped to have such a run of fixtures in such a short space of time.
“You can’t dwell on one game and then you have to move on to the next. It was a great three points against a very, very strong Spurs team who will do well this season and now we have to move on. We have to concentrate on the European game. It’s great to play the first leg away, try to get an away goal and we will go from there,”
Villa boss O’Neill admits spirits are high after their success in the capital – but insists their defeat at Stoke after sweeping aside Manchester City shows they would be foolish to get carried away.
“If we can’t get confidence from that performance then we never will,” said O’Neill. “We went to Tottenham, won the game and played delightfully.
“We’re capable of doing that – brilliant moves and fantastic performances – but you can’t make assessments.
“We played Manchester City and were terrific but couldn’t cope with Stoke. We’ve got loads of things to do to make us a proper side, a big side.Last season we scored goals for fun but we conceded too many. Liverpool was the first clean sheet in a long time, that was pleasing and we came to Spurs to attack.”
