Fears on crashes as horses roam streets

Wednesday 17th September 2008, 9:56AM BST.

Stray horses are once again roaming streets around three Black Country towns, prompting fresh fears that drivers’ lives are being put in danger.

Two miniature ponies have been seen near the junctions of Cot Lane, Summer Hill and Swindon Road in Kingswinford. Others have been spotted wandering near the Dell Stadium, Brierley Hill, and through Pensnett High Street. Councillors Dave Tyler and Lynn Boleyn are now working with the RSPCA to find a solution to the problem.

They say it has plagued the area for some time.

Councillor Tyler said: “It has been going on for years and just when you think the problem has gone away, we seem to get an influx in the number of ponies on the streets again.

“It is an accident waiting to happen. Although most drivers will see a horse standing in the middle of the road, you only need one who doesn’t see it to cause a major accident which will end up with both the animal and driver getting hurt.

“We are liaising with the RSPCA because we need to solve this problem for good and I am confident that we will find a solution that works.”

Councillor Boleyn added: “There have been several incidents lately and horses have been seen walking through Pensnett, by the Dell Stadium in Brierley Hill and by Russells Hall.

“I am concerned that if these horses are being allowed to walk up and down the street somebody is going to get killed.

“It is about time something was done and that is why I am in talks with the council, ” added Councillor Boleyn.

Brierley Hill, Pensnett, Brockmoor and Lye are just some of the areas which have been plagued by a group of stray horses in the past couple of years.

In February 2006, a stray horse was killed when it wandered into the road in Kingswinford and was hit by a car.

Ponies have also previously been reported rummaging in bins behind the Crestwood pub in Kingswinford, and up to a dozen were spotted roaming around the car park at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley.

RSPCA spokesman Andy Robbins said: “We are aware of the problem and we are in discussion with the local council and police about the best solution.”
