Vokes does not expect a place
Monday 15th September 2008, 10:55AM BST.
Supersub Sam Vokes insists he won’t be expecting a first-team place despite his match-winning brace at Charlton.
Vokes made it three goals from coming off the bench with his double to clinch a 3-1 win at The Valley. His heroics capped a milestone week for the 18-year-old, who celebrated his first goal and first start for Wales over the two World Cup qualifiers.
He said: “It’s been great for me to start the week with Wales well and then to score a couple of Charlton. I don’t think with the team playing as well as we’re doing, anyone can expect to play.
“The gaffer has shown he’ll play the younger players and give them a chance which is great because it’s a young squad.
“Everyone’s putting in hard work and doing a job and if I’m on the bench I’ll have to come on and see what I can do.
“When I came here, the manager said I was going to be one of four strikers which is good because I’m going to be involved most of the time.
“He said ‘if you prove your point then you play’ and that’s all you can do like I did on Saturday. Hopefully I can score a couple more.
“We were talking in the changing room afterwards and there’s lots of competition for places among the strikers.
“When you’re on the bench, you’re still part of the squad so you’ve got to take your chance when you get it, because there are three of us on three or more goals even though it’s ‘early doors’.
“I’m happy to bide my time but I think it shows great strength of the squad that there are players out there who can do a job.
“If a player gets dropped then, when they get their chance, they try to take it. It was unfortunate for Chris (Iwelumo) getting injured especially because he was looking forward to playing against his old club.
“But Andy Keogh did well and worked hard for 90 minutes. It’s a good feeling just to be involved.”
Vokes insists Wolves have the resilience to cope with the promotion challenge after coming from behind to win.
He said: “The boys are buzzing and we saw on Saturday what happened when we went 1-0 down. We all worked together and managed to claw it back to get a great win in the end.”
Vokes also believes he is on a steep learning curve with Wolves.
He said: “I’ve learnt a lot – the training, fitness regime and my whole all-round game has improved.
“Playing in the Welsh under-21s and the full side has helped – to come off the bench and then get a start in Russia was great for me.”
The striker believes beating one of their promotion rivals could be beneficial.
He said: “It’s going to be a close league. There are a lot of teams pushing towards the top and Charlton are going to be one of them.
“We managed to hold on and luckily we came away with three points. To score two goals was a great feeling.
“It was always going to be hard playing two games in a week – there’s a lot of travelling as well as we only got back on Friday morning.”
Vokes also thanked Stephen Ward for his contribution.
He said: “Wardy did brilliantly on the left and got a great ball in to me, Sylvan just missed it and I managed to get a touch on it.”
