Can Noel’s new show mend Britain?

Saturday 13th September 2008, 9:34AM BST.

Noel Edmonds’ new feel-good television show is hoping to mend broken Britain. Maria Cusine reports.

He once hosted a weekly house party with Mr Blobby in the village of Crinkley Bottom. Now Noel Edmonds is launching a one-man television crusade to help tackle “Broken Britain”.

His CV already reads like a catalogue of TV and radio’s most iconic formats, including Swap Shop and Deal or No Deal. And tomorrow he is Sky1′s answer to David Cameron as he pledges to help mend the nation’s broken society.

The TV legend says the new programme, Noel’s HQ, has the potential to be the most significant show he has presented in more than 40 years.

Tomorrow’s one-off live 90-minute entertainment special will celebrate and reward random acts of kindness. And it will also “name and shame” the greedy and ungenerous.

The show, which also sees Noel joined by a number of celebrity guests, is said to be a response to the growing frustration being felt by millions who see their nation changing for the worse and their communities – and therefore lives – changing forever. It aims to prove that a sense of community and generosity is not dead. “Millions of us are deeply unsettled, hugely frustrated and frightened by the disturbing changes that are occurring in the heart of our communities and throughout our once great nation,” says the presenter.

“This show on its own cannot hope to solve all the problems, but we can attempt to inspire, encourage and empower those who really do wish to create a more caring society.”

Noel’s HQ will combine feel-good with doing good and will attempt to change people’s lives forever.

Through local projects and nationwide campaigns, from light-hearted stories investigating “Bonkers Britain” to heart-warming stories of generosity and bravery, Noel’s HQ will attempt to inspire social change across Britain.

Celebrity guest Nell McAndrew can be seen joining forces with the Help The Aged campaign at Birmingham Airport, collecting the public’s unwanted foreign currency and turning it into hard cash.

l Noel’s HQ is showing tomorrow at 7pm on Sky1 and Sky1 HD.
