Wolves ahead of promotion target

Monday 8th September 2008, 11:31AM BST.

mickshouts4.jpgMick McCarthy has revealed table-topping Wolves are already ahead of his target for promotion.

But the Molineux boss insists he’s not surprised by how well his side are doing.

Wolves will go into Saturday’s clash at Charlton top of the Championship on goal difference with 10 points.

He said: “If I was brutally honest, we’re probably two points better off than I would have liked to have thought we’d have had.

“Let me clear something up, we’ve not had the hardest start. Going to Plymouth was always going to be tough, so we were happy to draw.

“But if we’re going to do anything, we should beat Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest at home.

“It was the away victory at Ipswich and the manner we played which has made things look far different. But I’m not singing from the rooftops because we’ve got Charlton away, Crystal Palace at home and Preston away, so there’s a tough month ahead.”

“Winning well is always nice. But it doesn’t come as a surprise. It’s me who picks the players and sets things up with the coaching and the tactics, so I don’t come in on a Saturday afternoon and think, flipping heck, what’s happening here then?”

So, we are targetting 2 points a game and we’re 2 points ahead of it. Wowsers – stop the press.

    Quiet day today then!

You can only beat the teams put in front of you and so far we have done well, lots of tough tests to come though. Keep the momentum going from the last few games and lets see where we are at Christmas.

In other seasons we havnt beaten teams like these so convincingly. Yes they are not the hardest games but in that case you have to beat them well, and we have……………….so far so good no matter who we have played, im sure sheff wed and Notts F dont think we are too bad.

43/44 points at xmas would do niceley- well on target for automatic, but there’s a long, long way to go and as Wolves fans, we should know more than anyone that if there’s any club where it can all go pear-shaped it’s at Molineux. But i’m not going to be negative – let’s keep up the great work from the early days of the season. I will be there at Charlton on Saturday with a few beers thrown in around London Bridge before the game- and Leicester Square after! We are Wolves….

A point on saturday would be good but palace and preston really must be despatched with relish. Preston are flattering to deceive but lucky.
