Wolves ahead of promotion target
Monday 8th September 2008, 11:31AM BST.
Mick McCarthy has revealed table-topping Wolves are already ahead of his target for promotion.
But the Molineux boss insists he’s not surprised by how well his side are doing.
Wolves will go into Saturday’s clash at Charlton top of the Championship on goal difference with 10 points.
He said: “If I was brutally honest, we’re probably two points better off than I would have liked to have thought we’d have had.
“Let me clear something up, we’ve not had the hardest start. Going to Plymouth was always going to be tough, so we were happy to draw.
“But if we’re going to do anything, we should beat Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest at home.
“It was the away victory at Ipswich and the manner we played which has made things look far different. But I’m not singing from the rooftops because we’ve got Charlton away, Crystal Palace at home and Preston away, so there’s a tough month ahead.”
“Winning well is always nice. But it doesn’t come as a surprise. It’s me who picks the players and sets things up with the coaching and the tactics, so I don’t come in on a Saturday afternoon and think, flipping heck, what’s happening here then?”

Super Mick
Report abuse
So, we are targetting 2 points a game and we’re 2 points ahead of it. Wowsers – stop the press.
Quiet day today then!
You can only beat the teams put in front of you and so far we have done well, lots of tough tests to come though. Keep the momentum going from the last few games and lets see where we are at Christmas.
Up the Wolves
Report abuse
Keep it gooin Mick.
Mick, you’re looking at the table in September? A bit early, I thought that you didn’t bother until April? Keep up the good work though.
…and modest too
Report abuse
In other seasons we havnt beaten teams like these so convincingly. Yes they are not the hardest games but in that case you have to beat them well, and we have……………….so far so good no matter who we have played, im sure sheff wed and Notts F dont think we are too bad.
dont be shy mick, take some of the credit
Report abuse
Wouldn’t it be better to say nothing ?????
O DEAR WHISH WE WOULDN’T DO QUOTES LIKE THIS MICK WHERE’S THAT BANANA SKIN ?
lol. that last comment made me laugh.
fairplay.
Yes,we’re in a great position. It would now constitute failure if we don’t go up automatic and as you say Mick you pick the team, you make it happen so please don’t give us another failure.COME ON ME BABBIES.
You have had a good start, told you last season to stick with MM when you all wanted him out. However someone posted where is the banana skin?if last season is anything to go by he received last week getting manager of the month.
Lets hope we can stay up and play a black country derby in the premiership.
hope you go up ,you deserve it
Report abuse
“so I don’t come in on a Saturday afternoon and think, flipping heck, what’s happening here then?”
LMAO :)
What a comment, Mick you legend!
He wins manager of the month but let me award him for press muppet of the year. Put a sock in it Mick and let the team do the talking
Report abuse
So in one year we go from saying “I don’t look at the table until June” to have a target number of points per game.
This guy really does understand it does he?
The sooner we are rid of this idiot the better.
vindaloony, Absolutely, I said it before if you ain’t got anything to say say nothing. Anyway if we lost our next game we would be 1 point behind our target, like all averages they mean more when taken over a larger statistical range, we’ll look again in April.
My apologies we’d be on target not 1 point behind, damn statistics.
Mick needs to walk quietly and carry a big stick.
No time to start feeding ego’s.I think it’s great that Wolves are top of the league but there are a few games to go and we need to focus on everyone of them.
thats it hes goin 2 start playin around wiv things
who u got saturday dingles anova pub team???
to be fair a draw at charlton and preston and a win at home to palace would be a good return. However, I think we are cable of 6 points, but maybe better to get 5 and keep the morale of being undefeated behind us
Report abuse
If you love Mick you respect what he says. And I totally agree with everything he has said in this report.
What is wrong with it???? For gods sake give them man a break.
Super Mick, Wolves all the way, real SUPPORTER and castigator.
43/44 points at xmas would do niceley- well on target for automatic, but there’s a long, long way to go and as Wolves fans, we should know more than anyone that if there’s any club where it can all go pear-shaped it’s at Molineux. But i’m not going to be negative – let’s keep up the great work from the early days of the season. I will be there at Charlton on Saturday with a few beers thrown in around London Bridge before the game- and Leicester Square after! We are Wolves….
My apologies I was taking three from 2, of course we would be level with Mick’s target if we lost, damn staistics
Report abuse
Over confident strikes to mind! Keep your gob shut mate. Our coat of arms states “Out of darkness cometh light” Please let the light shine not you. Thanks.
25) Its easy, just start ignoring them when you don’t like them like Mad Mick
Report abuse
so its been a fantastic start to the season. i think we are playing like we did under dave jones and we all know what happened under him. i aint going to get carried away as there is a long way to go and although i was against mick last season i have to admit we look good and i am sure mick will agree round pegs in round holes are better than square pegs in round holes ( playing players in their rightful position). keep it up lads.
tbh, if we have the ambition of going up, we really should be beating Preston whether it be at Home or Away.
going on Saturday, 8am train from wolvo to euston. Where would be the best place to drink before the game? I’ve heard people mention London Bridge but isnt that Millwall/Scum area?
Bar steward, surely you should be more concerned with your impotent forward line.
Shoes off if you love the wolves…
Report abuse
Yeah he is surprised.. why would’t he be? I remember Rotherham from a couple weeks ago and Morecombe last season..lets see where we are in a month..
31) London Bridge has some decent bars. Charlton area is not the best. Metropolitan bar is ok – a Wetherspoon’s on Baker St.
A point on Saturday would be ok but with the way we are playing, we must keep up this fine attacking football and hopefully we can keep a clean sheet at the back!
Going to the Charlton match as well – wouldnt mind hooking up with a few of the wolves fans before hand for a quick jar. Any suggestions???
I think people should head over to the Wolvs site for the full interview with MM before commenting on this version of what he said.
the fall is gunna be soooooooooo lovely aye boing boing donk
Report abuse
take the credit mick, you have to accept the stick when we lose,so enjoy it mate!!!!
Well Done Mick! Take the plaudits cos if your criticised when you make mistakes you shpuld be applauded when we are performing. UP the Wolves! cant wait for Saturday!
Think on.Remember Watford last season! Too early
to be counting chickens.
By the way Dr Mopp’, London Bridge is in
Arizona.
may i just say as a friend, and a knowledgeble football fan that i think your getting carried away,i must tell you that you havent got enough quality in the side to sustain your push for promotion,im sorry but thats the way it is,aye boing boing donk,

Wolves 1 – Palace 0
Wolves 3 – Preston 0
come on me babbies (:
38) We are able to fall from being at the top of the table, you can’t fall any further. Need to lend a striker….?
I think a decent bet is getting on the Northern line down to London Bridge and then across to Canary Wharf to watch Utd v Liverpool and then theres a link down to Greenwich which is next door to Charlton.
42,43,44,45 – It will be a cold day in hell before I ever take any advice off a baggie – no offence :0) Probably head for London Bridge and look for the Old Gold :0)
Apart from the poor team we put out in the Carling cup, I think we have been unstoppable.
If we carry on in that form we will not only kick hell out of this division but kick hell out of half the Prem.
However we all know it does not carry on that way. There is bound to be a wobble in form. Lets hope it does not last too long and we can start enjoying the footie we have on disply this season.
COME ON YOU WOLVES.
48. Trust me – Canary Wharf is a massively overpriced place to drink. The Cat & Canary is the only pub with Sky – £3.10 a pint of Carling, £4.95 for a plate of chips. But it has a dart board – so not all bad
Report abuse
Hope we are not looking at the table too early ! Last year we did not look at it at all until it was almost too late. Confused !!!!!
49,bazilwilf, well at least you took the time to read my post, just tryin to help,i bet you,l be looking up at the flats tho wow ya aye boing boing donk
Report abuse
51,wilfclub, how much is a plate of chips with a fish on,aye boing boing donk

51,your right about london bein overpriced,in WEMBLEY its really exspensive, but you wudent know wud ya cuz you never bin stick to the cat n canary aye boing boing
Report abuse
id love to be a baggie fan!not!why do they share there opinions in here?lol, they make me laf
Report abuse
If you dingles come up you would be just as much a fish out of water in the Premier League as your Black Country cousins from Sadwell!
Top of the table after 3 or 4 games and your champions already!
MM please remember we are only 7 point away from relegation! So not a good time to fly the flag it’s time to concentrate.Hope the gap widens and not go the other way.
I think MM is shooting himself in the foot with his comments, just play good football and start boasting when your 12-15 points clear…. but good luck hope we get up this time.
A long marathon race it is. too soon to count the chicken.
If Wolves consistently score and concede nil or less than the season will indeed be promising.
At the end of the road, do we see light?
Forward the Wolves!
Let me clear something up, we’ve not had the hardest start…
Expecting to slip back to mid table chumpionship mediocrity very soon!
55 – that’ll be the cost of all the hankies you have to buy each time you go there………….and LOSE
Report abuse
Terry I’d love to see what you actually look like!!! I have a picture in my mind & its not a good image mate!!! You really are the typical thick, annoying, stupid, childish idiot of Albion fan & if I was an Albion fan (god rest my soul) I would be embarrased to be associated with you. Your jokes are like something my 8 year old nephew would come out with.
57) We are not saying that but you think that you are top 4 potential? Not if you perform like you did against Stoke. I would not be surprised to see Brum’s 3rd team get a point of you!
the you have let us down again banners will be out soon, S ward is playing in goal on Sat.
Calm down lads…..
manager of the month status immediately brings a defeat. Always happens. It’s gods way of torture.
A point on saturday would be good but palace and preston really must be despatched with relish. Preston are flattering to deceive but lucky.
The break won’t have helped us. Our momentum was growing and the lads have to start again. However the influx of new players, greater competition and all of our players doing well thus far is encouraging.
Moses Mike will lead us to the promised land..
The difference,so far this season, has been the quality of the performances. We seem to have lots of good players in all areas.A no of these players could well make it at Premier level. The signs are good providing we can avoid any more injuries to key players.
Why do childish Baggies fans come on here with their stupid immature attempts at humour?
I think everyone will agree that Baggies fans opinions are welcome on here but only ones who have a mental age of more than four and a half.
Super Mick is doing a great job as are the player. Not getting carried away but its a dream start, lets see where we are in four games time!
Up the Wolves!
Hey Terry at east we can fall mate.
Baggies holding up the premiership yet again.
Is that boing boing the sound of a brummie Yo-yo?
This start is brilliant and more likely to carry on if we shout about it and get behind the club – including the people we don’t like.
WolvoMatt
Try coming onto an Albion page mate, see the drivel we have to put up with from some of your lot!
We may be ahead of our target/expectations, but that doesnt mean we’re gonna stay top.
I’ve had a better start to my final school year, but I’m not jumping around for A*’s, if we’re 4 points clear come the end of May, I will be flapping.
