Walsall close in on league title
Monday 8th September 2008, 6:29AM BST.
Walsall are almost home and dry in their quest for a third successive Birmingham League title after rain washed out the whole of the weekend’s programme.
Paul Wicker’s side need just one point at Wolverhampton in their final match of the season on Saturday to guarantee the title. They will clinch top spot anyway, if second-placed Himley fail to collect 24 points at Kenilworth Wardens.
Walsall are poised to become the first side since the Second World War to win three premier leagues in a row. They would also repeat their own historic treble in the 1930s.
West Bromwich Dartmouth remain in the bottom two and they need at least a winning draw at Moseley on Saturday to have a hope of avoiding relegation.
Cannock were relegated to division two as a washout in their game robbed them of the chance to collect the win they needed.
The rain did strengthen Smethwick’s position at the top of the second division.
They remain 14 points clear of third-placed Water Orton and will face struggling Aston Unity on Saturday as clear promotion favourites.
Wombourne were crowned champions of division three as they rain prevented their rivals collecting points.
They will be presented with the trophy before Saturday’s home clash with Coleshill.
Fordhouses will be relegated if Kington earn anything more than 10 points from their final match against Whitchurch on Saturday.
