Wolverhampton fighter Dean Harrison is off the Civic Hall boxing show on September 12 – instead he fights for a English title in Nottingham on Friday night.

The Scotlands light-welterweight has been given the green light by the British Boxing Board of Control to compete for the vacant title, against Derby’s Scott Haywood, to determine the new champion.

Haywood has twenty professional fights to his name, with just two defeats.

It will be a stern test for the 25-year-old, in his first fight since an enforced break, to allow cuts to heal from his bruising points win against another tough cookie in Gary Reid on a Civic show in April.

The bricklayer has been training like a demon and is convinced he can make the most of this opportunity.

He said: “I am over the moon to have this chance and I intend to take it. I have been training harder than ever over the last 12 weeks and will be ready. I will be bringing that gold home to Wolverhampton.”

“I may have short notice in fighting Scott, but I know him anyway so I know what to expect. It may actually benefit me. I didn’t know anything about my planned opponent at the Civic.”

Walsall’s Martin Gethin adds to the Black Country presence on the Nottingham show, as he slugs it out with a tough opponent in Sheffield’s John Fewkes for the vacant English Lightweight title.

The unbeaten Fewkes has an unblemished recorded, with 17 wins from 17 points.

First Team promoter Paul ‘PJ’ Rowson, who has both fighters in his stable, is confident that his boys will do him proud and bring home the titles.

He expects them to be attending the show at the Civic on September 12 to a hero’s welcome, parading the belts.

He said: “These are two very tough fights but there are two very tough lads. Dean Harrison is one of the most dedicated people I know, so even at this late stage he will be more than ready.

“Dean and Martin know the English title is the precursor to better things, so they are knocking on the door now. I cannot wait to see these two guys bring the gold home to the new home of boxing at the Civic on September 12.”
