Olsson capture to kick off business
Saturday 30th August 2008, 11:49AM BST.
Albion are poised to kick off a hectic weekend of transfer business by wrapping up the £800,000 signing of Swedish defender Jonas Olsson.
The Baggies, who have released goalkeeper Michal Danek, expect to complete Olsson’s move from Dutch Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen late today or early tomorrow – and they are targeting several more deals before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Former Sweden U21 star Olsson has been at the Baggies training ground for a medical, after Nijmegen accepted an offer and the player agreed personal terms.
Albion will conclude the deal if Olsson’s medical results are clear, before turning their attentions to other targets, with a new striker at the top of their priority list.
The deal for Olsson could eventually cost the Baggies £1.16m, with the final £360,000 payable in performance-related add-ons.
The 6ft 4in defender, who can play at centre-half or left-back, has carved out a reputation in his homeland and in Holland for taking no prisoners.
He has been a regular for Nijmegen for the last three years in the Dutch first division, helping them to two 10th-place finishes and an eight-place last season.
All in all, Baggies officials are braced for a busy weekend.
The club are in talks over several other players are are hoping to pull off at least one or two more deals.
Manager Tony Mowbray wants more firepower and discussions are ongoing with Real Mallorca over Argentine Oscar Trejo. Talks are progressing slowly and the Baggies have other alternatives on their radar.
They are also still talking to Charlton over China midfielder Zheng Zhi. A new goalkeeper may also now be on the wanted list, after the decision to terminate 25-year-old Danek’s loan from Viktoria Plzen.

To paraphrase from someone in the not too distant past we need to concentrate on a striker, striker, striker. We have got a sound defence which will get better as they get to know each other better, our midfield is strong and creative and will create chances galore but we need someone up front who can feed off the strength of Miller and poach in the box.
