Rocking Robin to mark anniversary
Friday 29th August 2008, 5:15PM BST.
A host of rockers from around the world will be descending on Bilston as part of celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of one of the region’s most prestigious music venues.
A week of anniversary celebrations has been pencilled in to mark the milestone at Bilston’s Robin 2 club.
The club was opened in Mount Pleasant in in September 1998 by Mike Hamblett.
He had previously run the Robin Club in Quarry Bank for 11 years, but he was forced to move venues due to doubts over the lease. He said: “I had 11 fantastic years there but with a huge doubt about the future of the lease and building I needed to secure the future of the club and eventually purchased a derelict building in Bilston in 1998 which was the start of what is now The Robin 2.
“After a huge amount of building work The Robin 2 opened its doors.
“The administration and box office was added, redeveloped from derelict offices in 2004, followed by the huge £500,000 redevelopment of the venue in 2005 which spread into a derelict property. Finally in May this year we opened the Robin 2 Hotel. What an incredible journey it has been and I am very proud of what has been achieved.
“To celebrate our 10th anniversary I have assembled a programme of international artists for the week, with some special surprises planned and something for everyone.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the many customers, friends and businesses who have supported the Robin 1 and Robin 2 over so many years.” World-wide hit Black Velvet will be ringing around the venue on September 16 when Canadian rock star Lannah Myles takes to the stage,
Birmingham-based Magnum will be performing on September 17 and The Counterfeit Stones will be taking to the stage on September 18.
Showaddywaddy will be on stage on September 19 and Cannock star Glenn Hughes, from Trapeze and Deep Purple, will be performing an acoustic set, full electric set and question and answer session on September 20. Jazz stars The Soft Machine Legacy will perform on September 21.
