Koren signs new Albion deal
Friday 29th August 2008, 11:28AM BST.
Robert Koren has become the second Albion player in 24 hours to commit his future to the Baggies.
The Slovenian midfielder signed a new two-year contract at the Hawthorns, a day after defender Paul Robinson penned a similar deal. Both new contracts include an option for a third year in Albion’s favour.
Koren, who was manager Tony Mowbray’s first signing at The Hawthorns, has become a popular figure since arriving from Norwegian side Lillestrom in January 2007.
Mowbray said: “Like I said about ‘Robbo’ yesterday, I want as many good footballers at the club as possible and Robert fits into that category.
“He has become an important member of the squad over the past 18 months and has a terrific attitude.
“I’m delighted he’s committed his future to the club.”
Koren has made 73 appearances for Albion and made his comeback from a pre-season knee injury in the 2-1 defeat to Everton last weekend.
His signature follows hot on the heals of yesterday’s announcement that 29-year-old Robinson had ended speculation over his own future.
Robinson agreed to extend his five-year-stint at the Hawthorns after several months of negotiations.
He said: “I had to think of my wife and children and the decision was made as a family.”
The conclusion of the two key contract negotiations is likely to mark the beginning of a hectic weekend behindt he scenes at Albion.
They will want two or three new players before Monday’s transfer deadline but Mowbray has cast major doubt on whether Charlton midfielder Zheng Zhi will now be coming to The Hawthorns.

Great news – Rocko is a genuine class player. With him and Robbo committing to the club, maybe the fans should have a little of their confidence.

Size ain’t everything in midfield is it? Koren has the same attribute as Ardiles and I quote the opposition,
“He was like marking dust” I would have loved to take up Terry’s offer of two seats for Bolton but I couldn’t. I was really looking forward to holding HER hand on the back seat Tel. Make sure the lucky devils who are going leave my new girl friend alone.
