Mowbray: Forget about cup exit

Wednesday 27th August 2008, 11:45AM BST.

mowbrayt8.jpgAlbion boss Tony Mowbray has ordered his players to forget their Carling Cup upset at Hartlepool and refocus on their meeting with former manager Gary Megson.

The Baggies were among three Premier League teams humbled by lower league opposition, as they went down 3-1 in extra time at Victoria Park.

Mowbray has instructed his players not to dwell on the surprise defeat, as they begin preparing for a crucial trip to Megson’s Bolton in the league on Saturday.

He said: “That game is gone. It’s finished with and now we are looking forward to Bolton. A win would have been nice but we can’t dwell on these things.

“The Premier League is our bread and butter and I think we have started very well in that. We are looking forward to every game.”

Mowbray played down the importance of a win for momentum against Hartlepool, after two decent Premier League performances against Arsenal and Everton failed to yield any points.

He said: “Whether you are a media man or a supporter, you want to see results and points on the board.

“But as a manager it’s all about the performances for me. If we play as well as we have done we will win games. It’s just a cliche that winning becomes a habit in the same way losing does.

“If your performance level is poor each week you will lose a lot of games but if your performance level is high you will win your fair share.”

More than happy to forget the match and the performance as long it’ NOT reciprocated in ‘Greed League’ games!

That WOULD really mean we are set for a VERY long hard season.

What’s needed is a result and the sooner the better.

Sadly unless there’s a vast improvement from the current strikers, OR the addition of a new as yet unknown signing, i reckon there are lots of ‘heartaches’ in store.

We have been narrowly beaten by last years 3rd and 5th place finishing prem teams and played a cup team who were well up for it!!!! I am not too bothered about the cup. We need to get at least 7 points from out next 4 games. BOLTON, W.HAM, BORO, VILLA. These are the teams we need to judge ourselves against. If we get nothing from these games then I will worry then. I think we need a prove nstriker and not a Real Mallorca reserve striker. Heskey, Saha on loan or even Marlon Harewood

No good Mowbray saying we played well Saturday and if we play like that we’ll win some. Het into the real world scoring goals is a must as the defence is going to give goals away every match. Greenings square balls and slow play will not achieve anything. He must sign a good striker or two. Fancy letting a real goal scorer leave and paying 3m for a bed wetting donkey, he’ll never score from now until Xmas and by then it will be too late

Disgrace is an understatement! Whoever decided to let Kevin Phillips leave over money will be having many sleepless nights. Its going to cost a lot more than his wages to find a player that can score goals consistently. Mowbray will probably go back to his 4-5-1 or 4-3-2-1 format giving us no chance of winning or even scoring.

The other worrying thing about our loss of form is how are we going to convince good players to join us?
Our defense lacks concentration and continually leaks goals.
Our forwards are firing blanks (why on earth did Albion pay 3million for Moore and let Phillips go? Madness!)and our midfield is congested and lacks imagination.

Sorry to disagree with you mate, but there was no ‘loss of form’ against Everton, they hardly had a kick of the ball and their supporters were only heard once they cashed in on the two clangers we dropped. It isn’t easy to play against NINE defenders, (Ten with the goalie). We do lack a sharp edge up front though and that needs remedying quickly.

Doesn’t anyone remember the FA Cup last year? Getting knocked out by a lower league side isn’t exactly a rarity these days. Back to the league, we’ve just lost by one goal to the 3rd and 5th placed teams from last year, not a spanking by relegation rivals so get a grip people! Everton have one of the best defences in the league so it was always going to be hard to score and you actually have to get the ball off Arsenal to score!

I’m getting deja vu with all these dogheads on here gloating…weren’t you doing the same this time last year? Look what happened then children.

Does make me smile though when they’re banging on about us losing to a lower league team when they got the same treatment! Oh and screemer, it doesn’t matter if Rotherham are unbeaten, you still lost to a League 1 team just like us! Jack*ss.

Why Mowbray played half the first team i don’t no,this is the one cup we had a chance of winning,Iwatched the highlights,if that lot are squad players then we have no chance of staying up.I have backed mowbury all the way but playing pretty football will not save us from going down, only sticking the ball in the net will do that.On Saturday it will be big boot against pretty football, MEGSONS ugly football against MOWBURYS pretty football lets see who comes out the winner

    86. No i’m not happy about going out to a team two divs below us, no doubts you ain’t either but i couldn’t care less about the cups this year (unless we get you in the FA cup)as i want Wolves to go for auto promotion and that has got to be the main aim just as you lot will forsake cup runs to stay up, correct me if i’m wrong

Hartlepool are quite a team and scoring two goals has put to rest the theory that Albion will not score many this season. The future is bright the mowbray way.

As i said pretty football against ugly football and it turned out to be a o-o draw, witch proves if you don’t put the ball in the net no one wins doesn’t matter how you play
