Weekend of violence on the streets
Monday 25th August 2008, 11:45AM BST.
Two men died and more were wounded during a Bank Holiday weekend of violence on streets across the West Midlands.
Police were called to six separate violent attacks in the region, many in city centres packed with shoppers or revellers. Officers today called for calm amid fears some of the attacks could be gang-related.
The weekend’s violence included:
* A 21-year-old man who died with suspected stab wounds following an attack in Wolverhampton City Centre.
* A 24-year-old man shot dead near to his home in Newtown, Birmingham.
* A father-of three, aged 45, stabbed in the stomach in West Bromwich.
* A security guard, aged 28, stabbed in the leg near to the Saddlers Centre in Walsall in front of shocked shoppers.
* A security guard from Sainsbury’s in Perton taken to hospital after being stabbed in the arm.
* A woman in her 20s attacked, knocked unconscious and seriously sexually assaulted as she walked home from a night out in Kidderminster town centre.
Detectives sealed off three of Wolverhampton’s busiest roads to carry out forensic examinations following city murder.
It is believed the man suffered a stab wound through the heart and was taken to New Cross Hospital by friends in a taxi at around 4am yesterday. The city’s Royal London pub fell within the cordon and it is believed workers on Saturday were forced to stay inside.
Police today appealed for calm amid fears of a gang war exploding on the region’s streets after a 24-year-old was gunned down near to his Birmingham home. Jobless Dimitri Foskin was shot in the chest within half a mile of his home in Newtown on Saturday night. In West Bromwich, plasterer Nick Savory was stabbed in the stomach as he walked home in Oak Road just before 5pm on Saturday, while a security guard was wounded in the leg a short time later in Walsall town centre.
A woman in her 20s was seriously sexually assaulted at around 3am today as she walked home in Kidderminster.

If people want to be violent. Put them in the army. Good men and women are losing their lives in war zones. These young thugs should be ashamed of themselves. Human life is priceless and irreplaceable, they are wasting the most valuable thing they, and those they kill, possess……life.

Like Brisbane Baggie, a lot of Black Country folks have left the area, some of them citing crime as the reason. Me myself, I’m living in Wolverhampton, and I think our city has a lot to offer culturally. Yeh – crime is a problem but there are a lot of good things here too. I love the diversity and vibrance of this city – yeh I like the place!

Bad parents make bad kids.
Lack of discipline equals lack of respect.
If we’re all so concerned, why are we all sitting here on our backsides doing nothing?
Broken products of society.

Why is there never a description of the person who’s carried out the attack?

I remember the Midlands being a nice place to live. Could it be the lack of discipline, respect and punishment causing this? Unfortunately, leftwing politics and leftwing liberal ideas have destroyed a once great nation.

The question I’m asking myself is: Do I want to come to Wolverhampton, even to visit my family? If I come to visit my parent’s grave, will I not find myself suddenly alongside them?

i used to live in perton around the corner from sainsburys i moved half a year ago and i am glad because it is starting to turn to a war zone there

I now live in Perton and have been for 16 years but you do seem to see a lot of strangers around here nowdays, which is a big worry. Its becoming a dumping ground for the unwanted.

Regarding comment #12, I acknowledge that there is a crime problem in Wolverhampton, but I feel that we should not let this prevent us from going about our daily business in this city. We must not let the thugs intimidate us to that extent. It’s only sensible to take care and be alert but we should still go out and about as normal.

I was at stabbing of the security guard at Walsall Town Centre on Saturday just after it happened with my sister-in-law and two young nephews. It is not what you expect to see while out shopping for the children’s back to school stuff. My younger nephew who is only 6, was guite scared and went very quiet the rest of the shopping trip.
