Steward injured as protest turns ugly
Monday 25th August 2008, 11:41AM BST.
A steward at Wolverhampton’s dog racing track suffered a broken arm after being knocked to the ground during an animal rights protest.
Police were called to Monmore Green Stadium during races on Saturday night after the safety steward was attacked. The man, who had been controlling traffic, was rushed to New Cross Hospital with a suspected broken arm. The protest group Greyhound Action holds regular campaigns at the racetrack to highlight allegations about the treatment of racing and retired dogs.
Joanne Till, Monmore Green stadium spokeswoman said: “Customers who were attending the stadium on their family evening out were alarmed at the violence caused by protesters.”
The 49-year-old steward, who has not been named, has worked at the racetrack for more than 10 years and bosses today spoke of their shock at the attack.
Richard Brankley, Monmore Green’s general manager, said: “There are regular protests from animal rights activists and there is a history of disruption as they try and stop cars getting in.
“This guy was just doing his job trying to keep the traffic flowing in and he was just set upon.
“He has worked at Monmore Green for around 10 years and he is the nicest man you could wish to meet so it came as a big shock what had happened.
“There is nothing wrong at all with anybody holding peaceful protests to get their views across but this has crossed the line and shocked a lot of the customers.
“We are not expecting him back at work for a couple of weeks but he will definitely be back eventually.”
Police scoured CCTV footage and two people were arrested in connection with the incident.
The attack came as the racetrack prepared for a fun-filled family event to raise cash for charity today.
Retired racing greyhounds on the lookout for a new home will be going on display for visitors the action-packed event to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.
A host of fun-filled activities have been lined up for the event, including face painting, bouncy castle and a tombola as well as a fun race for spectators around the track.
