Albion boss looking for more deals
Monday 25th August 2008, 2:51PM BST.
Albion boss Tony Mowbray plans to make at least two more signings in the final week of transfer activity before the new year.
Down but not disheartened by back-to-back defeats at the start of their third attempt to settle in the Premier League, Mowbray is not finished in his efforts to strengthen his side.
Chairman Jeremy Peace is ready to activate yet more spending in a summer of record outlay for Albion in the belief that the club has never been better placed to secure a long-range Premier League future.
Mowbray has been linked with variety of targets including defenders James Collins, returning to fitness at West Ham after a lengthy injury struggle, and Jonas Olsson, a Swedish centre back with NEC Nijmegen.
Charlton’s Zheng Zhi is another on the Albion radar, although weekend reports now claim Hull City are a rival for his services.
And the potential signing which will capture the supporters imagination, Real Mallorca’s striker Oscar Trejo, is still in the wind.
With Albion still to register a goal in open play, added forward power will be high on the fans’ wish list although Mowbray remains relaxed about his options.
But after defeat by Everton on Saturday left Albion still seeking their first points he said: “There are players to come in. There are nine days left.
“But I don’t think strikers are going to be our problem. We scored 106 goals last season, 105 the year before. We will be fine.
“There is no knee jerk reactions on our part on not taking enough chances because these boys have earned the right to have a go in the Premier League.
“We’d like to sign another striker if we possibly can but if we can’t, then so be it.
“We are not going to score 100 goals this year but when we do create chances, we have got to try and take a high percentage of them.”
