Greening relishing home return
Saturday 23rd August 2008, 10:10AM BST.
Albion captain Jonathan Greening is relishing the return of Premier League football to the Hawthorns.
The skipper is confident Albion can get their points tally up and running against Everton. Greening believes spirits are high in the Baggies camp and he is excited about his latest big occasion leading the side.
He said: “When I first got the armband I was concentrating on promotion. Now we’re here and it was great to lead the side out last weekend against Arsenal at the Emirates.
“Now it will be great to lead them out for the first home game against Everton and I can’t wait. We will try to play good, attacking, free-flowing football. If we can do that in most games we can beat anybody, so we need to be on top of our game.
“We have been training hard all week and looking good. Confidence is high after the performance against Arsenal. We didn’t embarrass ourselves so we need to take that into today’s game and show people what we’re good at.
“It’s always nice to get the first game out of the way. We knew it would be a good test but I thought that in the end we did quite well – after the first 10 minutes.
“We got back into the game and in the end could probably have sneaked a draw. They caught us by surprise with their speed of play but once we got to grips with it, we did really well and showed good character.
“In the second half we did really well. Paul Robinson had a chance cleared off the line. Roman Bednar went on and caused all sorts of problems as well.”
