Molineux could be renamed
Friday 22nd August 2008, 2:03PM BST.
Molineux could be renamed to generate multi-million pound funds to fund the redevelopment of Wolves’ ground.
Club chairman Steve Morgan insists ‘Molineux’ will remain in the title, but the board are considering sponsorship to help finance the development.
He said: “It’s possible it could become the ‘Something’ Molineux Stadium. Emirates are paying Arsenal about £50million over 15 years and, if we get serious sponsorship, it would be idiotic not to consider it.”
Molineux has been Wolves’ home since 1889. While many clubs have introduced new names when they have moved stadiums, only Bradford City and Leyton Orient have renamed their traditional grounds.
Morgan also revealed the club was exploring the possibility of leasing part of the ground to generate funds. Wolves currently hold a 125-year lease from Wolverhampton City Council on the ground.
He said: “We’re talking to an occupier who wants to lease part of the stadium and that would give us significant revenue.
“That would be at least a 15-year rent and would be a catalyst for stage one of our redevelopment, irrespective of whether we win promotion.
“The redevelopment work will be done incrementally, because the last thing I’d want is a 35-40,000 stadium and have it half full.
“The capacity would probably increase by 2-3,000 each time we did a stand.”
Morgan added that Wolves were unlikely to move to a new ground.
He said: “There are no obvious replacements unless you go the edge of the city. Transport communications are good, with parking and public transport, and we benefit the city economy.
“Molineux is the right place but it’s not without problems when it comes to redevelopment.”
The ground’s current capacity stands at 28,576, but the board are considering extending that figure to 40,000, as and when Wolves are promoted to the Premier League.
Redevelopment plans should be made public within two months. Morgan promised fans great care would be placed on stadium appearance.
He said: “I’m a builder, so construction is close to my heart,. There will be great consideration and I always want Molineux to look a great stadium.”
Previous owner Sir Jack Hayward paid for the previous redevelopment of Molineux, which saw three new stands built between 1991-94 at a cost of around £20million.
Morgan was talking to supporters at the Fans’ Parliament at Molineux.

This is a joke right!
Why not change our colours while we are at it and the name of the club. Hey it worked for MK Dons!
Not keen on any changes to the stadium name. Shouldn’t we just get to the Premiership before starting down this road?
If any of you Boggies mention custard so help me!!
Shame really but it makes sense if we got serious money.
Depends on what we want to be really. A club that can compete with the big boys(when we get there) or a club that gives way to sentiment and stands still or slips away.
lol………….Quality!
It is the way football goes these days. As long as the money is good, we have to take it.
It doesn’t matter what the ground is called, it is what happens on the pitch that counts.
It could be called the Tampax Molineux as long as we get promoted and stay up!
They must keep the name. I understand sponsorship but so long as Molineux remains in the title like he suggests then I be happy. Saying that I am excited but cautious with this. As he says we dont want a half empty stadium. At least we will have a stadium which would look to be even, rather than the un even heights of all 4 stands!
Stevie Morgan’s barmy army!
Whatever is best for the club i suppose, but i’ve always (biased) regarded Molineux as one of the most beautiful names out there… and will always call it such .
Question is, if you rename a stadium, rename the team, move the HQ to the Bahamas, playing 11 foreigners, is it actually YOUR team you are supporting?
dont think so.
As long as he keeps Molineux in the name, i’m not overly fussed. And we need to avoid being sponsored by Birds Custard.
I’ve heard that the albino are renaming their ground the bargain bin sponsored by the tesco out of date stock aisle.
nothing like preparing for the future
Report abuse
WHO CARES…
Report abuse
Looking good for the future, if we are realistic about getting anywhere in the premiership we need a bigger ground and i know we would fill 40,000plus gates. I just hope we dont get the moaners on here giving it the cold shoulder, yes years ago molineux was a great stadium but now it needs to be upgraded and capacity increased to move forward. Up the Wolves !
this is my least favourite idea so far
Report abuse
and plus as much as i hate to say the obvious were not arsenal
Report abuse
if they are going to lease the ground out to generate money . . . please please lease it to Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen so they can grace our hallowed turf with their undeniable superstardom!!
Not really sure how to take this, to be honest. We haven’t yet properly ‘re’- develloped the team so why are we thinking, yet again, about re-developing the ground?
How many here remember how long the now “Steve Bull” stand stood empty after it was built?
Build the team, take the success, get the fans queing at the gates hoping to get in THEN re-develop the ground – supply and demand…
As for changing the name of the ground – it will ALWAYS be the MOL to me and many others, whatever they choose to call it. Hey, the REAL fans know the REAL name!!
You can be successful without having to sell your soul.
Fix the team first Morgan, get us up and then watch the money roll in.
Keep Molineux in the name, get a major sponsor in…. could be the making of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. Just imagine if (and to you boo boys it must be a huge if) most of that money went in to the team. Am I dreamin’ ? Who knows but unfotunately that’s the way football is going these days and I think we have to get in there before it’s too late.
15: Dan Bath.
If we get £50 million we could be at least top 6. Do you not think.
If we get established in the Prem we’ll fill 40,000 week in week out.
I know this will hurt the West Brummies feelings but it’s true…
Report abuse
I think we should concentrate on acutally staying in the prem be4 u do this as it will be a waste of money. Just take Wolves vs Sheff W not full at all. We should spend more on squad or wait intill we do get promted and have a bigger transfer kitty like Sunderland did.
3) Don’t worry mate… they can’t get a sponsor for their shirt and as for their ground, there is one good stand the East Stand.
They dare not knock!
hmmm..
I like steve Morgan, i think he has a vision and it’s not all about profit for him.
I also think that his heart will never really “be in” wolves, although of course he would never admit such a thing.
From his point of view its a great thing to do… expand the stadium and let someone else pay for it (think anyone would sponsor the extension on my house?).
I can see where this is going. Morgan has to keep the club for 5 years or so, and invest 30million.
He then flogs the club to someone for £xxx million and suddenly he’s made £xxx million profit… and got rid of that nagging itch to own a football club. Let’s not forget that he’d drop wolves in a heart beat if liverpool ever came up for sale.
Keep smiling, the future’s bright… the future is fanta orange.
We’ll be calling it the Stadium of Light of MM gets his own way…
Report abuse
If you say you dont like the idea then dont moan when we dont buy the players.
It we get X amount of money for putting a name before molineux then its good business sence an more money in the club.

21. That’s a big bloody IF though, isn’t it?
Where’s all Morgan’s millions?
Its MOLINEUX to me anyway you look at it ;)
My money is on one of Mr Morgan’s companies will do the work and get the sponsorship deal!!
What’s all the fuss about???
The fans in the Jack Harris still chant “The south Bank” etc etc
As long as Molineux is retained in the title somewhere and we then generate more income, then we should not be worried

Unusually for this esteemed tome, rather too much emphasis has been placed on what was quite literally one sentence in a three hour discussion. I can understand the need to stir up a bit of controversy in order to rescue flagging sales, but the viewers of this site should by now be keenly aware of the agenda behind the reporting. Many other things were mentioned in the same fashion, but it’s obviously more difficult to get the fans worked up with statements on the commitment to the academy, the ongoing maintenance and improvements to the stadium, the plans to have both North and South Banks home only if and when corners are filled. The report says the “board are considering extending that figure to 40,000” when talking about the capacity; in actual fact Jez revealed that the incremental increases would mean that final capacity is ‘the last question’ deal with when planning any rebuild of the ground; there is certainly no ‘target’ when it comes to capacity. They also fail to mention the timelines involved, with would be considerable, again, as was covered in the meeting, yet not in this ‘report’. More great work, from the Guess and Star.
Thats the plan.
Dalston Wolf. In next 10 years to be top 6 of prem.
What a load of rubbish. I hope this never happens; and while their at it ban shirt sponsors, bring back standing, abolish the premier league and make it 10 quid to get in. Sorry, I get like this on a fairly regular basis.
I thought this Morgan fellow was meant to have loads of money. All the Dinguls bleating about his £20m….
Oh dear.
Maybe we could get sponsored by Moulinex and hope nobody notices the difference.
It all needs looking into. Alright Morgan bought into the club, but the last thing we want is the Chariman (whoever that may be) getting upset by pouring millions down a pit and not getting a return, as we all know what happens next, we get sold to the first joker who comes along and suddenly we’ve got an exhiled bent ex-president as our owner and………..you know the rest.
Unfortunate but true, we have to be able to make money outside of just TV rights. We certainly wouldn’t be getting any Champions League money at all soon even if we got up so we have to do something to fund ground expansion/team improvement/ever increasing wages.
If we rely on Morgans millions we’re scuppered before we start.
Why don’t we see if we can get sponsored by that kitchen appliance manufacturer, it’s close enough for no-one to notice!!!
It doesn’t matter what they call it it’ll always be known as Molineux and that will NEVER change!
It isn’t the Jack Harris stand it’s the South Bank, it isn’t the Asda Molineux or anything like that, it will always be called the Molineux no matter what the official name is.
If we can get a multimillion pound deal for it then great, good for Morgan, good for the fans, and good for Wolves but it’ll always be Molineux and that’ll never change.
Steve Morgan gives me the impression he knows what he is doing and if other clubs can generate revenue by renaming their grounds, then why can’t Wolves?
Providing it is not renamed ‘Tarmac Molineux’ or ‘Wimpey Molineux’ etc then a great idea.
As for increasing the size of the ground, this must only be done when everything else is ‘spot-on’, that being the quality and strength of the squad and finally achieving Premiership status and staying there for more than 1 season.
Increased revenue for football clubs comes in different packages and Wolves have been stupid in the past for not getting on the ‘gravy train’ but we must not fail to do so again.
When the big day arrives, reaching the Prem that is, we will need all the revenue we can generate to buy the players necessary to maintain a top league place, so putting ideas such as Morgan’s in place now will produce rewards for later.
I remember listening to a question & answer session with Sir Jack, Dave Jones and Moxey.
Sir Jack was mortified when asked Sir Jack if they should rename the Molineux after him.

If we got £50m for sponsorship rights to molineux I would eat the keyboard I’m typing on

This is a Joke –Yes ?. How on earth can you compare the Arsenal and our organistaion-come on. 1.Arsenal is in the first city–60.000 crow assurred
2Have you ever tried to get a ticket-40 percent of their take is tourist generated–Website £100.00 a ticket.
3.The stadium was generated also with the Olympic and Commenwealth games in view.
4 Development around the stadium is considerable and it draws on the vast community around it
5The Management have a Master in charge of team development and are established in the PL
Surely our goal is to get to the Prem and to do that- there has to be a vast change in the ideology of bringing in players-We have to layout wages that will bring in players-Develop the stadium-get to the PREM and then we can be serious about our future–
Are we really saying that our City will give us the crowd numbers the Arsenal can command–I do not think so—Lets keep our feet on the Ground and get to the PREM–In short Steve Morgan do that first stay there and then we can move on—Keep the Dream Alive–Crazey Dave.

13: When did you last get 40k for a League Game? wake up!!
20: Definately, you should make the top 6 of the championship.
Same old stories on here, when we do this, if we do that, all talk no action. Your just a mediocre, second division club, always will be.

I would like to know when morgan is going to spend some of his money and get us a team.

If we change the stadiums name we will lose some of our history and tradition. I wouldn’t touch the name. If we end up with ‘Chaucer Molineux’ or ‘Molineux sponsoured by Chaucer’ I would go completely crazy at the board. Why does everything have to be so money-motivated. Lets get on with building a future Prem side, none of this stadium talk is gonna help us get where we want to be.
It was always affectionatly known as THE HOLE

I’m not for or against the renaming… what shames me is that football has got to this point where money takes over tradition just to stay competitive

Comment 24…
Steve Morgan only has one ambition with the Wolves, and that is to make money off the back of the club. He is a business man who created the multi million pound fortress that is Redrow Homes….
Look at it from another perspective: Your a Wolves fan with X million pounds. You couldn’t afford to buy the Wolves because the board wouldn’t back a takeover behind you….
So to fit in with the other millionaires/billionaires you buy a smaller club miles from where you live, say…. Bury. Now, are you going to put your heart and soul into transforming that club, and your hard earned cash when you support the Wolves?
Is Steve Morgan going to transform the Wolves into a team that competes against his beloved Liverpool? Of course not. He just want to say I own a giant bowl of custard in Whitmarines…..
He could always knock it down a build some nice new houses?????

This guy is taking the club forward. I think Molineux should be in the title but if we are going to compete we have to move forward with the times. Imagine the stadium was renamed the ‘chaucer molineux stadium’ but the club got 40 mil over 15 yeard we would all still call it the mol. Sub letting part of the stadium will also bring in revenue. He is taking us forward as a club not as a football team. Look at Leeds, whilst in the champs league, fantastic football team who was looking after the long term financial interests of the club?! I am a business man myself and have nothing but admiration for this guy a true entrepeneur with his heart transplant from Liverpool to Wolves, always a bigger club than the albion and soon to be a better football team!

First of all the stadium DOES need an upgrade, the facilities and access in the Billy Wright Upper are abysmal. The seating is great but the “tunnel” that is the walkway is too narrow and hopeless to navigate when busy. Mind you if the Stewards didn’t disappear at half time they could help ease the congestion! I remember the bleak days of only two sides of the ground being open and don’t want the stadium to deteriorate to that level ever again.
Anyway, I agree that whatever name any Sponsors apply will make no difference to the true fans, it will always be Molineux to us.
I can’t see what the fuss is about, if Steve Morgan brings more money into the club in which he has invested, why shouldn’t he take a profit, or share of, if he moves on eventually? In the meantime, if he gets the money and we do get promoted and stay up, all you moaners will disappear.

Why not? Molineux will always be Molineux regardless of what it is called! Sometimes you just have to move with the times! Would we rather leave our spiritual home for a soulless cold stadium on the edge of the city?!
I’m not sure if many of you remember the furore that surrounded shirt sponsors when they introduced them??? It is part and parcel of the modern game and I guarantee you every club up and down the land will have changed their ground name in some way shape or form in ten years time once they all cotton on to the prospect of bringing in bucket loads of cash for doing next to nothing! Big clubs across Europe are already doing it!
Morgan is a shrewd businessman and I trust his judgement. He clearly states it will still be called Molineux just with something preceeding that and when that sponsorship deal runs out it will still be called Molineux.
Don’t stress guys the fact that our club moves from strength to strength and keeps up with other clubs in terms of the business side of things is all that matters in this day and age!!

I’d also like the capacity increased to 40,000 as quickly as possible, price the seats right and we could fill it. We often have thousands of empty seats now, because the prices are to high. Raise the fan base first, before prices, it will raise revenue in other ways.

I haven’t got a problem with this as long as “Molineux” stays in the title as Steve Morgan has promised. What’s wrong with the official name being the “Acme Molineux Stadium”? I think it would be a bad thing for the stadium to be cheapened by a sponsorship name. As an albion fan i would be horrified if the hawthorns name was changed. Some things should not be touched. Wolves dont need to change the name of the stadium…it has a proud history. But knowing Jez Moxey we’ll probably end up with “The West Bromwich Building Society Molineux Stadium”.

I recall not so long ago before Randy Lerner, the prospective buyers were thinking of changing the name of Villa Park to something like Cadbury Stadium or Cadbury Park, it didnt happen and it wont at Molineux either…stupid people, have they nothing better to do

Why do some people keep having a go at Steve Morgan.Football is now a business and SM is a very successful businessman.I keep seeing comments about him putting his money into the club. Do the Glaziers or Tom Hicks and George Gillette put theirs in no it’s all loans from the banks. In any business you have to look to the future and that is what SM is doing in the best interest of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

i would hate to see the name of the stadium changing no matter how much money is offered,i seem to remember sir jack saying that when he handed the club over to new owners there was to be no name change or re location of the stadium-
molineux forever up the wolves!!!

I find it rather amusing that half the posts on here are from albino fans. Always jumping up and down trying to get attention, like the little kid who no-one gives a flying one about. You’re worse than the jocks. Major small man syndrome. If i were you i’d worry about yourselves, promoted as Champions, very entertaining good quality football AND YOUR CROWDS WERE STILL SMALLER THAN YOUR BIGGER RIVALS WHO HAD SEEN SOME OF THE WORST FOOTBALL AT MOLINEUX FOR YEARS.
Now go back to your own local rag… Oh hangon a minute, you haven’t even got one!!!
SMALL TOWN, SMALL CLUB, SMALL BRAINS, SMALL AMBITIONS, SMALL FANBASE, SMALL TROPHY CABINET, SMALL STADIUM = WBA

Although this has turned into a mud slinging fest (84 Filton, surprised at you.) Yeah it’s good for a joke and there have been some funny ones from both sides, (Mixu P very good.) Don’t want to get too serious but isn’t it a shame that the people running football now, seem to know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Thing is, if we do go for a sponsor, they will want the whole name. They won’t pay full price for the ChaucerMol. Especially after reading all the posts here about how we will still call it the Molineux. Fact is, if it is renamed, we WILL end up using the new name. That’s because reporters are forced to use the official name, so all the results you read, the report you hear, will say “….and at the Chaucer Stadium, Wolves beat the tescos…..”
Sad, but true.

Renaming ‘The Molineux’ – no way leave our home alone. Put a sponsorship sign on the front of the building by the main entrance if you must but please do not start messing with our name. The emirates stadium reminds me of Chelsea not Arsenal as emirates airline were Chelsea sponsors. Mention Molineux to people and they immediately recognise it as the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Long may it reign!!!

Why are all you guys obsessed with money and making the ‘top six’?
Wouldnt it be nice to buck the trend and actually develop the club. Invest in youth. Create a pure local team we can truely call our own. You guys know the most popular players recently have been our own nurtured, youth developed, Henessey, Murray, Jo Lesgod, Davies……(dam injuries!!). If anyone knocks us, at least we would be a WOLVERHAMPTON Wanderers and not The Screwfix Direct Wolverhampton call 118 118 Wanderers Bet Now Football Smoke Royals Club.
Carry on demanding money and carry on booing our promising players (collins before he even kicked a ball against sheff wed, later to be best man on pitch). But whats it all worth? We allready sold our soal when old Jack Hayward took all our money and ran like a theif in the night (and we still think he is a hero- what he invested, he took out, and then some).
The only thing we need to copy from arsenal is there youth development, but, even that isn’t english…….

I think we should press ahead with the Stadium redevelopment now, rather than wait until we reach the Premiership. Would you really want one stand closed for Development if Wolves have already reached the Premiership ? Let’s start in the Summer, wherever we may be. In reply to the calls to develop the team before the Stadium – there’s only so much money can do teamwise – we can’t buy massively expensive players at this time anyway, simply because they wouldn’t join a Championship club. As long as there are guaranteed funds for players – and that is for Mick to negotiate – then let’s build a Stadium for the future.
As for re-naming, I am fiercely against this as a rule, but at least retaining “Molineux” in the name would be something of a compromise. We must not forget that by leaving the Molineux name unchanged – we are also generating revenue as it advertises the Club itself !

Wow!! What a response after just one line said in a meeting!!!
Now if we all put all this passion for the club into supporting evey kick of the ball at home games, we might get a few extra points this season.
I moved from the north bank this season into the south bank, because allthough everyone calls the south bank boo boys (which some are) the boo boys are all around the ground! its just that the south bank is the only stand in the ground that makes a noise, or creates an atmosphere therefore is considered the ‘voice’ of the club. the north bank was dead last season, there were only a few pockets of what they see as resistance (people chanting and singing) carrying the whole stand. At one point last season, the only chant that got going in the north bank was in NL1 rows p to t when either myself or five other fans would start by chanting “theres only one of us singing” then it would carry on, “two of us singing”, “three of us singing”,……but it never got above five, and created a whole bunch of dirty looks of the ‘fans’.
Sod the money folks, sod the bitterness, don’t worry about the days of the bahtty brothers, and don’t even worry about us getting into the premiership!
We are fans! it is’nt ‘our’ club any more, that went away when wolves became contendors for the premiership. it is a business, run by businessmen, and we are the same people who went there when it was just ‘wolves, the once great club that is in the lower leagues, stuggling for survival’.
Accept what happens in the boardroom and the mind of Mr. Morgan, because i think he is a good businessman, so what actual harm can he do to us?
Just get in that ground on saturday and applaud every pass(even if it ends up on asda car park) and applaud every player and make them feel like they belong to a club with great fans who support THEM instead of a club full of fans who worry about the finances!
Personally, i would’nt care if they were a pub team, because they’re still gonna be the club my dad used to take me to watch, the same club i take my daughter to watch, and the same club she will take her kids to watch!
WHO CARES???
GET OVER IT, AND BEHIND THE LADS!!!

maybe we are dreaming of getting to the promised land where you are currently at, but can i point out that before you come all high and mighty with us you cant even fill your ground which holds something like 27,000 so look at yourselves when you say we are a mediocre side when you clearly are less of a club than us
COME ON YOU MCCARTHY BOYS!
