McCarthy pledges to attack
Friday 22nd August 2008, 2:00PM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has pledged to carry on with his attacking policy at Ipswich.
McCarthy admitted he is also no nearer a breakthrough on signing a defender, as he hinted at a recall for transfer-listed Darren Ward.
Instead, the Molineux chief is urging his Wolves players to take the game to the Tractor Boys, after last week’s 4-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday.
He said: “West Brom scored 88 League goals last season and we were the third lowest scorers in the Championship with 53.
“We had the second or third best defensive record and yet we finished outside the play-offs. So scoring goals will ultimately get you promotion. I’m absolutely convinced we carry more of a goal threat.
“We do look like conceding more and if we can eliminate that then we’d be far more solid.”
McCarthy’s attacking strategy means Chris Iwelumo, who has scored four goals in two starts, is set to keep his place leading the attack. He believes the former Charlton man can be the missing link.
He said: “Let’s hope Chris proves to be that this season. Last season we had footballers but they didn’t want to get in the box. We would not have scored those two headers last season.”
As for the search for a replacement for Jody Craddock, McCarthy refused to answer speculation surrounding Sunderland’s Danny Higginbotham.
He did give a glowing reference to Ward, who is high in his thoughts to replace Craddock.
He said: “We’re still looking. There are two or three we’re looking at and we’ve been looking all over the place,” he said.
“We are doing alright. We have got Neill Collins, Richard Stearman and Darren Ward. I’m happy with the squad. We were one down because Darren looked like going out the door.
“But he’s trained particularly well and done well in the games.”
