Police on the move as deal is signed

Thursday 21st August 2008, 4:56PM BST.

policehqjupi.jpgPolice bosses have finalised a deal to shift Staffordshire Police’s HQ to one centralised site in Stafford.

The contracts have been signed just two months after the major move was announced in June. Police staff will start to move into their new base next year.

Currently, the force’s central headquarters are three miles apart, split between a site on Weston Road and ageing buildings in Baswich.

Now, Staffordshire Police will be moving all its operations from Baswich and selling off the land for housing development.

It will then move into more than 50,000 sq ft of purpose-built office space on Staffordshire Technology Park – a site which borders its Weston Road facility – to create one centralised headquarters.

The deal is the biggest office move in Stafford this year and will see around 300 police staff moving into units one and two, both at 25,500 sq ft, at Lanchester Court in 2009.

The chairman of Staffordshire Police Authority, Michael Poulter, said: “This is a sensible move which will benefit the force and people of Staffordshire operationally and give our staff better, purpose-built accommodation on one site.

“The move also supports Stafford Borough Council’s property strategy as it frees up a prime site for residential development which can only be good for local people and businesses.”

The director of Gladman Developments – the firm behind Staffordshire Technology Park – is David Gladman.

He said: “This deal justifies our decision to spec build the largest office buildings to date in Stafford and brings us close to completing our 10-year development of more than 300,000 sq ft of office space at Staffordshire Technology Park, which has helped provide a home for some 4,000 jobs in the town.”
