Thursday 21st August 2008, 11:33AM BST.
Hundreds of people descended on Walsall Town Hall to see one of the world’s greatest military bands take to the stage.
The famous Grenadier Guards had its audience in raptures last night as it performed some of the most famous great marches, concert melodies and musical scores.
The show was part of a tour of the country to raise funds for Grenadiers and their families who have been affected by serious injury and disability.
Speaking before the show, Band Sergeant Maj Andrew Wood, who has been a member for four years, said: “We are all here tonight to raise money for a very special cause. The venue is superb.”
The band’s repertoire included musical scores such as Festive Overture, Sing Sing Sing and Auld Lang Syne. The hall’s organ was also deployed to the delight of the audience as the band played The Organ Symphony which was met by a standing ovation.
Among the audience was William Farrell, aged 72, from Walsall, who said: “I have had a wonderful time. The musicians are second to none. It has been a very special evening.”
Ellen Ramsell, of Walsall, said: “It has been an absolutely wonderful night.”
David Langford, 58, from Sedgley, was there to watch his 31-year-old son Jonathan who is a horn player in the band perform. He said: “We are all very proud of him.”
Brian Doyle, chairman of the Walsall branch of the Grenadier Guards, said: “We have had over 300 people turn up. It has been an absolutely tremendous show. We are hoping to raise around £3,000.”
