Hennessey blameless say teammates

Dinamo Bucharest midfielder Gabriel Torse scored the winner from a 35-yard free-kick that bounced in front of the Molineux shotstopper. His colleagues were united in their view that Hennessey was blameless for the freak 64th-minute effort.

It wasn’t a successful night for the Wolves contingent, with Sam Vokes missing two unmarked headed chances and being pushed by midfielder Adrian Ropotan for what appeared a clear penalty in injury-time.

Midfielder Dave Edwards said of Hennessey: “He’ll bounce back. No one blames him, because it was a good free-kick that was hard for a keeper to deal with. I’m sure he’ll come back stronger.

“We’ve seen it so many times – a ‘Beckham-like’ free-kick to the far post. Wayne had to stand his ground and wait for a header.

“Unfortunately that never came, which made it hard for him, and the skiddy surface didn’t help either. Wayne will know more about it, but it happened in a split second.”

Wolves goalkeeping coach and former Wales under-21 keepers’ tutor Pat Mountain was in the stand.

He said: “The goal was all about delivery. It was whipped in and as a keeper, you’re waiting for a player to head it. Unfortunately, it ended up at the far post and in the back of the net, but I don’t blame Wayne.”

Apart from blocking Bogdan Stancu’s shot with his legs early on, picking the ball out of the net was the only things Hennessey had to do, on a night when Wales, who fielded a strong side as they needed to win to qualify for the UEFA Championship play-offs, laid siege to the Romanian goal.

Edwards had a shot blocked after being put through by Vokes, but it was the latter who was left rueing what might have been, after twice sending clear headers over in the 24th and 29th minute’s, from crosses from Gareth Bale and Ched Evans.
