Wolves close in on Higginbotham

Wednesday 20th August 2008, 10:30AM BST.

higginbotham.jpegWolves are closing in on a £1.5m deal for Sunderland defender Danny Higginbotham – and the signing should be sealed when the Black Cats sign Anton Ferdinand.

North east sources say the Higginbotham transfer has been agreed in principle pending Sunderland signing a replacement for him.

Wolves, irritated their search has been made public, are playing their cards close their chests.

They maintain Higginbotham is one of ‘two or three’ targets, but believe a player signed for £2.5m a year ago will cost slightly more than the £1.25m quoted yesterday.

But a positive decision from Ferdinand should see things fall into place.

Roy Keane has reportedly had an £8m bid accepted by West Ham for Ferdinand, but with reports that Tottenham could now enter the bidding, the player’s arrival on Wearside is by no means cut and dried.

And until Sunderland replenish their defence – they currently have just five defenders – Keane won’t allow the versatile Higginbotham to leave.

Stoke are also rumoured to be interested in the 29-year-old, who made 21 League appearances for Sunderland last season.

But Higginbotham, who can also play left-back, is understood not to be keen to join the Potteries club.

McCarthy’s move for Higginbotham after losing Jody Craddock for three months would end a summer-long search which has seen him miss out Hearts’ Christophe Berra and Jason Shackell from Norwich, as well as priced out by Bobo Balde’s £30,000 a week wages.

A strong header of the ball with decent pace, Higginbotham is a good organiser and left-sided – something McCarthy has been searching for, as well as a goal threat, as his record of 17 in 250 League appearances suggests.

Signed by Keane from Southampton a year ago, Higginbotham started his career at Old Trafford, making four League appearances before a £2m switch to Derby in 2003 where he added 86 Premier League matches in three years.

ARE YOU HAVING A LAFF .. £1.5M ON A 29 YEAR OLD SUNDERLAND REJECT PLEASE .. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.
We need a YOUNG and QUICK centre half for a lot less money not an old and slow one for £1.5m.

We need to get someone in on loan.

    J.DJOUROU or A.SONG from ARSENAL …
    C.GUNTER from TOTTENHAM or …
    J.EVANS from MAN U.

    And get someone in permanant.

A.GERRARD from WALSALL , E.WARD from COVENTRY or M.BEEVERS from SHEF WED.

These are all cracking players that wolves could do across the back 2 centre half’s.

PLEASE MICK DONT GET HIM IN .. GET A YOUNG AND QUICK CENTRE HALF FOR A LOT LESS MONEY.

We have no chance of Jonny Evans, Beevers was not particularly great on Saturday for starters – in response to your scouting list.
Higginbotham is a good player and would be a snip at about £1.5 million.
What annoys me with Moxey/Wolves is that they denied all knowledge of this yesterday and the next thing if it comes off is the undisclosed fee tag… which we all know will be between £1.25 and 2 million!

good signing if you ask me left footed defender will add much needed balance to the side, elokobi and higginbotham on left side and both left footed and stearman and foley right side both right footed!!
what difference is it that he is 29? no good having a defence with a combined age of 22!! they make mistakes as it is, they need someone helping them out to guide them, anyway higginbotham aint that slow or does his stats on FM2008 say otherwise?? as long as he does a job what is the problem? iwelumo is 30 you want to get rid of him do ya? As prem teams have 7 subs – i cant see Djourou, Gunter or Evans being loaned out (i think most were on the bench for their respective teams over the weekend)

I cant see a rival club (Cov) selling the best CB they have and if we were thinking about Ward im sure we would have factored it into the Eastwood move. Shef Wed like-wise wont sell Beevers to a rival and as they are looking to be taken over are in no rush to cash-in on talent.

I think Higginbotham is as good a signing as we can hope for – left footed, prem’ and chap’ experince and the right age for a mature leader at the back

3 – give the cut and paste a rest for just one day please.

So, from our fit starting defenders from the opening two games possessing such vast experience – Hennessey, Elokobi, Stearman, Foley – you would rather see another inexperienced player come in?

So we should get Djourou from Arsenal? I’m sure he wants to play for us – small problem, he’s in Arsenal’s starting line-up!!!! Meanwhile, Song is a key member of their squad once he’s back from the Olympics. Gunter was on the bench for Spurs’ opening game whilst Johnny Evans – on loan to a prem team last season – could be available. I would think that if he’s good enough to play in the prem on loan (and Keane wanted to sign him permanently but Manure didn’t want to sell him) there’ll be enough demand from other prem clubs to take him if that’s Ferguson’s plan for him this season.

You finish off by saying SIMPLE!! I think you probably are!

Added to that he has experience which we desperately need at the back. If you do indeed Trust in Mick then surely you must trust in this decision to go for Higginbotham ?

However this move could be a long way off from being completed. Spurs look as though they might go in for Ferdinand and that would put an end to it.

    5. Can’t see how you make the leap between lack of ambition and signing a centre half that would be an improvement on what we have there already. True – we’ve been ignoring what almost everyone, bar MM apparently, has known is a gaping hole in our squad. True, it’s more money than we’d probably like to spend – not so much desparation, more to do with market prices with only 12 days or so to the end of the transfer window.

On that basis, have you not spent £3m on a Villa reject? £3 1/2 million on a Liverpool reject? £500k on a SIS reject? £2.5m on a Hearts reject? £2.3m on a Heerenveen reject? £1.4m on a Porto reject? £100K on a Livingston reject? £2m on a Bolton reject? £4.75m on a Mallorca reject?

Cannot see how anyone can slag off a potential signing until we see him play a few games and see how he fits into the team.Having said that I do worry that MM does seem to mainly pick either ex Sunderland rejects or Irish players.Since he has been here he has not purchased one overseas player, which I find astonishing when everyone says British players are over priced

And, how has he simply replaced SEB ??? To top it all Higginbotham would bring some much needed experience to the back line – don’t forget he has had Premiership experience. We need an experienced head at the back. Two youngsters in the centre, young fullbacks and a young keeper isn’t ideal. I think he would be a good addition to the squad and would add balance. Wrong my boy.
It isn’t called “SLANG” it is called bad English.

It isn’t slang to spell “know” without the k… it is a different word.
Also, it is customary to spell “writing” with two instances of the letter “i”.

The phrase “I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE A STICKER ON ME” doesn’t quite mean what you want it to as you have missed out the punctuation.
On the subject of punctuation, the use of two full stops (..) has no application as far as I am aware. I believe you meant to use a series of three full stops (…) as this is called an ellipsis. This is used to indicate missing words, phrases or sentences in a quoted passage, or to indicate an alternative and unstated meaning in speech (rather than a simple pause that is indicated by a dash).
In the above statement I believe that you actually wanted to use a dash after “WOW” and an exclamation mark after “be”. It still wouldn’t be grammatically correct but it would at least be making a start in the right direction.

    See “YorkshireWolves” after school.

If this signing does come off I would be delighted. It seemed as if no more signings would be made this summer so with Craddock injured we were forced to make a move, and Higginbotham is better than Craddock so our team will have improved. Neill Collins wasn’t up to it last season, I cringe when he enters the fray, but he did a cracking job and put in an imperious performance on Saturday.

I ended my hols a week early to get behind the boys and relished every minute (Particularly after Iwelumo equalised) and it was great having the vocal support that our heritage craves.

we’ve got a real chance this season and from the outset last season we were hopeful at best.

    COME ON YOU WOLVES!!!

PS: and i’m never fickle – my support is unwavering, as our support makes the difference in many a game…give it a go you doubters or support the thrushes…and we all know what thrush is an irritating ****

I have now read THREE yes THREE articles about this possible move. Isn’t there anything else to write about! If he comes he comes. Surely one well written article would have done it and allowed the readers to comment. Why THREE! geez guys must be more going on than this.
