Wolves close in on Higginbotham
Wednesday 20th August 2008, 10:30AM BST.
Wolves are closing in on a £1.5m deal for Sunderland defender Danny Higginbotham – and the signing should be sealed when the Black Cats sign Anton Ferdinand.
North east sources say the Higginbotham transfer has been agreed in principle pending Sunderland signing a replacement for him.
Wolves, irritated their search has been made public, are playing their cards close their chests.
They maintain Higginbotham is one of ‘two or three’ targets, but believe a player signed for £2.5m a year ago will cost slightly more than the £1.25m quoted yesterday.
But a positive decision from Ferdinand should see things fall into place.
Roy Keane has reportedly had an £8m bid accepted by West Ham for Ferdinand, but with reports that Tottenham could now enter the bidding, the player’s arrival on Wearside is by no means cut and dried.
And until Sunderland replenish their defence – they currently have just five defenders – Keane won’t allow the versatile Higginbotham to leave.
Stoke are also rumoured to be interested in the 29-year-old, who made 21 League appearances for Sunderland last season.
But Higginbotham, who can also play left-back, is understood not to be keen to join the Potteries club.
McCarthy’s move for Higginbotham after losing Jody Craddock for three months would end a summer-long search which has seen him miss out Hearts’ Christophe Berra and Jason Shackell from Norwich, as well as priced out by Bobo Balde’s £30,000 a week wages.
A strong header of the ball with decent pace, Higginbotham is a good organiser and left-sided – something McCarthy has been searching for, as well as a goal threat, as his record of 17 in 250 League appearances suggests.
Signed by Keane from Southampton a year ago, Higginbotham started his career at Old Trafford, making four League appearances before a £2m switch to Derby in 2003 where he added 86 Premier League matches in three years.

Discounting my little joke yesterday, this bloke would be a great signing and would probably lead our back line…
I’m not holding out for anything yet though as Stoke are still interested.

ARE YOU HAVING A LAFF .. £1.5M ON A 29 YEAR OLD SUNDERLAND REJECT PLEASE .. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.
We need a YOUNG and QUICK centre half for a lot less money not an old and slow one for £1.5m.
We need to get someone in on loan.
J.DJOUROU or A.SONG from ARSENAL …
C.GUNTER from TOTTENHAM or …
J.EVANS from MAN U.
And get someone in permanant.
A.GERRARD from WALSALL , E.WARD from COVENTRY or M.BEEVERS from SHEF WED.
These are all cracking players that wolves could do across the back 2 centre half’s.
PLEASE MICK DONT GET HIM IN .. GET A YOUNG AND QUICK CENTRE HALF FOR A LOT LESS MONEY.
GET 2 CENTRE HALF’S IN MICK
.. BUY 1 AND LOAN 1 IN !! SIMPLE !!
IN MICK WE TRUST !!

Imagine Mick is fairly high on Sunderland’s Bank Manager’s Christmas Card list !

Steve Morgan said Wolves have ambition.
Ambition isn’t spending 1.5 million on a Sunderland reject, its more of a desperate for a centre back move.
We may not be playing you in the premiership next year after all.
IN MOWBRAY WE TRUST, THE FUTURES BRIGHT ITS BLUE & WHITE!
i think with should get both Ward (cov) and beever (sheff wed). Beever showed what a good player he is last week against us, not one goal was his fault and as for Ward he always plays well against us and he may bring the best out of his brother also.
Please for this weekend though Mick play Darren Ward instead of Collins, Please!!!!!!!
Good pedigree and will certainly shore up our back line. Well Done Mick if you can pull it off!

3) The voice of Wolverhampton speaks again.
We have no chance of Jonny Evans, Beevers was not particularly great on Saturday for starters – in response to your scouting list.
Higginbotham is a good player and would be a snip at about £1.5 million.
What annoys me with Moxey/Wolves is that they denied all knowledge of this yesterday and the next thing if it comes off is the undisclosed fee tag… which we all know will be between £1.25 and 2 million!
3. you always post this stuff, you must love football manager??
djourou PLAYS for arsenal first team he is the one who cleared off the line when them lot down the road thought they scored on saturday!
good signing if you ask me left footed defender will add much needed balance to the side, elokobi and higginbotham on left side and both left footed and stearman and foley right side both right footed!!
what difference is it that he is 29? no good having a defence with a combined age of 22!! they make mistakes as it is, they need someone helping them out to guide them, anyway higginbotham aint that slow or does his stats on FM2008 say otherwise?? as long as he does a job what is the problem? iwelumo is 30 you want to get rid of him do ya? NO! thought not.
no. 3 …. hmmmmm …
As prem teams have 7 subs – i cant see Djourou, Gunter or Evans being loaned out (i think most were on the bench for their respective teams over the weekend)
I cant see a rival club (Cov) selling the best CB they have and if we were thinking about Ward im sure we would have factored it into the Eastwood move. Shef Wed like-wise wont sell Beevers to a rival and as they are looking to be taken over are in no rush to cash-in on talent.
I think Higginbotham is as good a signing as we can hope for – left footed, prem’ and chap’ experince and the right age for a mature leader at the back
Report abuse
I agree, yes we need a centre back but 1.5 million. What i waste in my eyes.
3 – give the cut and paste a rest for just one day please.
So, from our fit starting defenders from the opening two games possessing such vast experience – Hennessey, Elokobi, Stearman, Foley – you would rather see another inexperienced player come in?
So we should get Djourou from Arsenal? I’m sure he wants to play for us – small problem, he’s in Arsenal’s starting line-up!!!! Meanwhile, Song is a key member of their squad once he’s back from the Olympics. Gunter was on the bench for Spurs’ opening game whilst Johnny Evans – on loan to a prem team last season – could be available. I would think that if he’s good enough to play in the prem on loan (and Keane wanted to sign him permanently but Manure didn’t want to sell him) there’ll be enough demand from other prem clubs to take him if that’s Ferguson’s plan for him this season.
You finish off by saying SIMPLE!! I think you probably are!
molinuex roar, you are a idiot! we need some experience and this guy fits the bill
he also has some pace and is a goal threat. sounds like a good deal to me! we already have plenty of babies in the team so an old head is a good move. he is only 29 anyway.
idiot
Report abuse
3. Molineux Roar….read the post my friend – it says he is a good header of the ball and has decent pace – unless of course you have seen the guy play regularly and know better !! Added to that he has experience which we desperately need at the back. If you do indeed Trust in Mick then surely you must trust in this decision to go for Higginbotham ?
However this move could be a long way off from being completed. Spurs look as though they might go in for Ferdinand and that would put an end to it.
agree with 3! might as well spend twice as much on a better, younger defender as at least we will get the money back on him if the worst happens. 1.5 on this guy would be a waste.
Not convinced by this to be honest. We’ve only been waiting for a decent center half for 2 years, may as well wait another couple.

Higginbotham is a good signing – we already have a young, pacey centre-half in Stearman.
You can’t play two young inexperienced centre-halves together – it’s suicide.

i totally agree, higginbotham is the type of player we need someone who has experience at this level and a older type of defender who can help out stearman etc…
to add to the iwelumo part of your comment, wonder what 3. The Molineux Roar must have thought when we signed irwin and ince!!!
3 – So experience counts for nothing then……..
The molinuex roar… ur living in dreamland!!! were not going to attract players like those to Wolves… We need experience now we have lost Craddock… Its a must!

An ideal siging. Experience great pace for those who actually have seen him play, great in the air. Why on earth would we not want this guy??
the young and hungry prospect wolves team can only go so far, we will go nowhere unless we have alot of expeirence in our team, just look at hull and stoke who went up with expiereneced players. Im sure he will do a great job for us. isnt he th eone with the big throw or something?????
5. Can’t see how you make the leap between lack of ambition and signing a centre half that would be an improvement on what we have there already. True – we’ve been ignoring what almost everyone, bar MM apparently, has known is a gaping hole in our squad. True, it’s more money than we’d probably like to spend – not so much desparation, more to do with market prices with only 12 days or so to the end of the transfer window.
On that basis, have you not spent £3m on a Villa reject? £3 1/2 million on a Liverpool reject? £500k on a SIS reject? £2.5m on a Hearts reject? £2.3m on a Heerenveen reject? £1.4m on a Porto reject? £100K on a Livingston reject? £2m on a Bolton reject? £4.75m on a Mallorca reject?
3, WBA just spent £4.75 on a 31 year old and by all accounts he’s quality (yet to see if he can play in the english leagues) ex Real Madrid as well.
Higginbotham approx £1.50m he is 29, well bled into the english game and ex Manchester Utd.
Why not get a young centre half as well…..Hmmm Stearman is 21.
In Mick i trust.
So £1.5M is a waste for an experienced defender who has played in the premiership only last year ?
I think we should go for jay de merritt
Watford are skint and have to sell and he is quality- higginbottom is hardly a reject though
Report abuse
Anyone who has actually been to see Wolves play would know that we need experience at the back, particularly in this league. Stearman is a good young prospect but needs to settle. He is far more likely to do that with someone of Higginbothams calibre and experience. I believe he will be a good signing.
5) Don’t comment on something you know nothing about. We have probably the youngest Wolves team ever. It’s full of full and under 21 internationals and many you are jealous of. All 3 of our goalkeepers are better than the ‘full’ internationals you have.
Just because you have signed a player that played a few games for Real Madrid, it does not make you world beaters. Most of your forwards could not hit Vanessa Feltz’ backside from 2 yards!
We better have back up plans cos the is a good chance Anton Ferdy won’t wana go to Sunderland
Report abuse
Just what we need in my eyes, will lead from the back and we need a good experienced defender alongside our other youngsters…
with some fans, Mick cant do a thing right

19. its just so funny though isnt it, we could sign rio ferdinand and people would moan “why we signed a current england international who as loads of england caps, champions league winner, premiership winner but is 29???. we should keep neill collins much better prospect and a former scotland B international”.
if higginbotham signs back him not boo him, the same people slagged off the iwelumo signing now he is best thing since sliced bread (although i prefer uncut can cut the bread to the size i want then).

Speaking as a 38 year old who isnt quite ready to be carted off and shot yet can peopel stop saying 29 is old !!!
Seriously I would suggest 29 is an excellent age for a centre back, old enough to have plenty of experience but not old enough to be burned out (hopefully)
Sounds a decent signing to me and will certainly be better than Collins or Ward
Report abuse
you all make me laugh, yeh lets get another youngster to add to a back line of elokobi, collins, stearman and foley, prob 1 of the youngest in the league
WE NEED EXPERIENCE,
Think about it.
Higginbotham is a great signing and will last 3 years at least.
Losing Craddock is an absolute God Send in my book. All we need now it to lose Karl Henry to the same injury, and we’ll have a decent team.
As MM has no clue about players, then the only way
is to lose them through injury!
We’ve a great chance now Craddock is out, as long as Collins doesn’t appear!

I think he wud be a great signing! So what if he’s 29, Our team needs experience, and 29 isn’t old for a deffender. Even sir Alex Ferguson has said a defender is in there prime when they get to 30. And look at Sol Campbell who’s got 2 b 33 or 34 and he’s still cutting it at a top level. Higginbotham is just what wolves need, a bit of a Paul Robinson, U’ll never see him pull out of a challenge!!!

I agree with 40, how on earth is 29 old for a footballer these days? Jamie Carragher is 30 so I suppose based on this criteria you wouldn’t want him at The Mol becase he’s past it?.

I would suggest that Higgy is better than ANY centre half currently on our books and would be a great signing.
Experienced yet still has many years left in him, big, strong, determined and not the slowest.
He is also available at a fair price….this may be due to having previously dealt with Sunderland and they don’t want to rip us off (you can make friends in business !)….. afterall, everyone knows we are desperate for a centre half and some other clubs may just have bumped the price up accordingly !!!

68. Mowgli….does your name reflect your age ? That can be the only reason you would make such a post !! On what grounds do you base your statement about Iwelumo being a waste of money ? And, how has he simply replaced SEB ??? To top it all Higginbotham would bring some much needed experience to the back line – don’t forget he has had Premiership experience. I’m not saying he’s the complete solution but he could certainly help us get to the Prem.

61….. i have been saying exactly the same about berra from hearts, he’s young, talented, hearts captain and scotland player, quick strong and would have done well at wolves. but what did we do we go in with silly bids when if we had offered £2million right away he would now be a wolves player. at the time hearts had no manager, huge debts and anyone was for sale at the RIGHT price, he was wanting to move and his agent was up for it. we pissed about took to long now they have a new manager who wants to build a team around him. he will get a big money move for lots more than we would have paid. opportunity missed!!!
higginbotham good addition to squad but feel there are better and cheaper options but we are no desperate to get anyone in and clubs no it.

This guy has loads of experience and is a proven Championship performer.
As for his age, he is actually younger than Rio Ferdinand. Does anyone here think Ferdinand is too old?
We need an experienced head at the back. Two youngsters in the centre, young fullbacks and a young keeper isn’t ideal. I think he would be a good addition to the squad and would add balance. The fact that he’s played for Sunderland doesn’t mean a thing, MM didn’t sign him and he isn’t Irish so can we forget that old chestnut for once?

you lot are like a bunch of kids squabbling…are you kids on holiday from school ? (I dont mean the Albion infiltraters as everyone knows you lot dont have any education)
Ill give you something to argue about rather than insulting each other, here is the team we should play on Saturday:
Hennesey
Foley
Elokobi
Stearman
Higginbottom (hopefully) or Collins
Henry
Jones
Kitely
Jarvis
SEB
Iwelumo
subs: Gray, Davies, Ikeme, Keogh, D.Ward
there you go lads argue about that one

87 The Molineux Roar, No it’s not called slang, it’s called IGNORANCE a bit like your assumption that I’m an armchair supporter.
I may well live in Yorkshire now but I was there on Saturday and I still attend plenty of matches, as I have done season after season since 1971, when I go to Don Valley Stadium against Rotherham on Tuesday it will be my 89th different ground watching Wolves.
Have you ever been away or won’t your Mum let you go?
It’s Yorkshire Wolves btw not Yorkshire Wolf you clearly can’t read OR write.
84. Yorkshire…I’m with you mate !! Molinex Roar, that is not slang, it’s just sheer bad spelling !! A starter for 10 for you on slang….a banger is slang for (amongst other things) a sausage !! To barf is to be sick…get the idea ?
87, looks more like you can’t spell!!!

Re: 87
Wrong my boy.
It isn’t called “SLANG” it is called bad English.
It isn’t slang to spell “know” without the k… it is a different word.
Also, it is customary to spell “writing” with two instances of the letter “i”.
The phrase “I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE A STICKER ON ME” doesn’t quite mean what you want it to as you have missed out the punctuation.
On the subject of punctuation, the use of two full stops (..) has no application as far as I am aware. I believe you meant to use a series of three full stops (…) as this is called an ellipsis. This is used to indicate missing words, phrases or sentences in a quoted passage, or to indicate an alternative and unstated meaning in speech (rather than a simple pause that is indicated by a dash).
In the above statement I believe that you actually wanted to use a dash after “WOW” and an exclamation mark after “be”. It still wouldn’t be grammatically correct but it would at least be making a start in the right direction.
See “YorkshireWolves” after school.

68, you can’t possibly have seen Iwelumo in the pre-season and season games. I have and he has scored 7 yes 7 class goals, a real finisher, he has not replaced SEB between them they’ll get the job done.

Higginbottom will be a good signing if and when it comes off.however a top quality signing is needed now offer 3 million for Berra and along with Higgingbottom a total spend of 2.5 million allowing for sales is not a bad investment which might just ensure promotion
Report abuse
I think he will be a good signing, the problem is now that the cat is out of the bag, we might lose him. That is no doubt why Jez and co were in denial mood yesterday:best to say nothing until he has signed.I know I make lots of typos but I expect better from the E and S Sunderland signed him from Stoke not Soton as stated in the paper and above.Get yourself a football annual Tim Nash, surely the E and S pay you enough.

47 – it was season before last when the pie and pint fiasco went on – you not a real fan then? I will be surprised if you know WHO astle is…By the way he’s WAS king, until the BULL era. THERE’S ONLY ONE RON SAUNDERS!!
STILL NO SIGN OF VALERO….
79. Thought not. Well perhaps some of your informants might be able to tell you what SEB’s role is now because if he plays where he played on Saturday he certainly won’t be the league’s top scorer this season; and (notwithstanding his explosive start) I am willing to bet Iwelumo won’t be either.
I’ve seen this guy play and didn’t do anything wrong in my eyes. He’s been around for a while and he’s quick, good in the air and solid should bring some much needed experience.

mol roar, correction, slang and spelling mistakes are two completely different things. and its “know how to read my” not “now how to read my”.

Some people seem to think Berra is better than Higginbottom.
Can we have some stats on this. Or are people still thining that we only buy Sunderland players?
5. Astle you are dead right there fella you’ll be in the championship and we’ll be in the prem.
Good signing if he comes, will be good for Stearman, foley and Elokobi, you do need experience and he is also a leader.

So much negativity…. everyone’s saying we need a defender, MM goes for one and the moans get louder.
Having looked at about the first 20 posts i am annoyed at how many are negative. £1.5m would be a very good price for a defender who is apparently quality at championship level. If this signing does come off I would be delighted. It seemed as if no more signings would be made this summer so with Craddock injured we were forced to make a move, and Higginbotham is better than Craddock so our team will have improved. Not really something to be moaning about!
Foley Stearman H’bothan Elokobi

29 isn’t old and for £1.5m you are likely to get 3-4 years before offloading them to another club for maybe £500k.
Sometimes you can’t get the young and hungry players people on here are referring to, just as other clubs can’t get Kites or SEB without playing silly money.
I think too many muppets on here are playing football manager on the PC and don’t live in the real world?
This may be controversial on here, but I rate Collins more than I do Ward.
I don’t understand everyone’s problem with him, well I do, but I think he gets some pretty rough treatment by some of the fans.
No-one is getting upset when he bangs in headers that win us games, and he’s not always the one a fault at the other end.
D. Ward has been as much a culprit in those stakes in my eyes.
Just cos he’s a bit uncoordinated doesn;t make him a terrible player. Let’s try and build his onfidence if he’s gonna get an unexpected run in the side shall we!
Would be better than we have at the moment and has the experience required.
Would be a good move for Wolves.

Personally I think Higginbotham would be a good aquisition. Premiership experience, decent pace and decent scoring record for a CB.
We need some experience (by experience I mean somebody with a few years behind them!) to go with Stearman, who I think is still just a little nervous!
And, having read this page, some people really need to screw their heads on properly. Some of the names banded around on here are ridiculous!
In Mick I trust.
Oh and I’ll believe more in Mick if he maintains playing two wingers away from home, weel kill teams if we do!
UP THE WOLVES!

Higginbotham was player of the year at Derby. He was also player of the year at Southampton. He is also someone who is not afraid to go where others might not like to go! Not a bad CV when you think of his other attributes. We would do well to add him to our squad. He seems to fit the bill perfectly.

Higginbotham will only come to Wolves if Sunderland sign Anton Ferdinand from West Ham – Roy Keane is hopeful of bringing in up to 4 players shortly – otherwise Higginbotham is staying put

As a Baggie, it seems to me there’s only one thing a Wolves fan hates more than an Albion fan and that’s another Wolves fan.
Yorkshire, Filton etc.
By all means have a go at Mol Roar about his views but not about his English. My English is reasonable but I wouldn’t have a clue how to adjust the timing on my car. We’re all gifted in different ways, obviously not all football geniuses, genius’s, genii. I’ll leave that for one of the professors to correct.
99 Cheslyn.
Astle will always be the King to Albion fans of a certain age, just like Billy Wright will be for Wolves. I know you’re just trying to be provocative but as Jeff isn’t here to stick up for himself, I’ll point out that he scored his goals in the Big League.
PS. On the Higginbottom subject that I came on here to look at. For what it’s worth. I think it would be an excellent signing as he’s a decent player. While it’s easy to talk about loaning Gunter or buying Beavers, your manager has to live in the real world and these type of players have their eyes on the Prem.

Bill you are right-They get their exam results to-day that will probably keep the masses quiet for a while– Agree with the team but would like to see Mr. H in there if poss-29 to old what ?- are we kidding- if he is then I ‘ll have ten more please-Ipswich is going to be a hard game and a test -remember what happened last year at their place–MM needs to get rid a this slow 20minute start before we get going–It will be a good measure of our WOLVES this early in the season–Keep the Dream alive-Craze Dave

As regards the last part of your post I think your point about Higginbotham is a valid one.

120 Just so you’re clear, I don’t hate ANYBODY, least of all Wolves fans, I can even put up with you lot IF you have something constructive to say.
BTW Where do you think Billy Wright played his football whilst winning his 105 England caps (captain in 90 of them)? or where you trying to compare Bully rather than Billy?
Talking of England records Bull played 13 and scored 4 goals, Astle played 5 and scored NO GOALS…
Agree with you about Higginbottom though.

I came away from the last game feeling good, but a little troubled. When I thought it through, I realised that what is missing is experience. Plenty of raw excitement and effort, but where was somebody to put his foot on the ball, and take control?
We badly need an experienced centre half and Higginbotham also adds an extra experience bonus to the team.

Blouse are now in for Bobo
Djorou has gone on loan to Rennes – liked the look of him as a centre half – Boggies were rumoured to have wanted to loan him
NB* Someone like John DeWolf would have been an ideal type of player – Are there any characters like him around anywhere??? Anyone know???

127 Baggies 1812, what a pathetic attempt at trying to be inflamatory and clearly you want to get a nasty, spiteful response from somebody. Well you will get no such pleasure from me and I would advise all other fans to do the same. Here is a tip for you, if you want to provoke an argument in that style at least be clever about it and not so blatant.

Filton and Yorkshire.
Wasn’t having a go at you, just felt sorry for Mol Roar as he seems to have enough problems without worrying about his Granma.
The comment about Wolves fans wasn’t connected with you three but a general observation about the amount of testosterone expended on this site.
The bit about Wright, Astle and Bully was in answer to someone who chose to have a go at Astle for no apparent reason. I only mentioned Billy Wright as a deceased hero comparison. It was Steve Bull who had been held up as a better player than Astle, I merely pointed out that all of his goals were scored in a lower standard of football, except for 4. Could he have cut it in the top division? I suspect that he might have done well but we’ll never know will we?
I come over here in peace and to have a laugh, not for a fight. Good luck this season.

I’m Wolves through and through, as are my daughters.
we recently moved from S Bull stand to B Qiuet due to thickos behind us kicking us and our seats all game.
They thought they were Hansen, Lineker and Lawro.
They were ( like the BBC) quick to criticise and even slower to praise.
If Kightly missed his name was mud for a fortnight.
I love the Wolves, would bleed for them, no less, but the support leaves plenty to be desired.
You (and I) want promotion? Back the Manager and Team and see where that takes us!
I can’t stand muppets who never give a second for our TEAM and slag everyone off at the first opportunity.
Get behind the team, or bugger off.
You’re not welcome at the Moloneux.
Give the kids a chance.
(cue everyone claouring for Thick Mart, Sack Mart, Mart Out, etc!!!)
Soz, but someone needs to point out the malevolence within our own four walls.
Neill Collins wasn’t up to it last season, I cringe when he enters the fray, but he did a cracking job and put in an imperious performance on Saturday.
I ended my hols a week early to get behind the boys and relished every minute (Particularly after Iwelumo equalised) and it was great having the vocal support that our heritage craves.
we’ve got a real chance this season and from the outset last season we were hopeful at best.
