McCarthy may throw caution to wings
Wednesday 20th August 2008, 2:53PM BST.
Mick McCarthy believes Wolves can ‘wow’ with two wingers on their travels as well as at Molineux.
The Wolves boss unleashed wingers Michael Kightly with Matt Jarvis in tandem for the first time this season last Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday and was rewarded as both starred in the 4-1 win.
McCarthy can also call on Stephen Ward, who started the season at Plymouth, Michael Gray and Daniel Jones in the wide positions.
But as Wolves prepare to return to action at last season’s home form team Ipswich on Saturday, Ward is challenging hardest for a place, and McCarthy has admitted the Irishman offers more stability away from home.
Yet he is willing to consider Kightly and Jarvis together.
“I don’t know – it’s very different away from home,” said the boss. “Playing two wingers should have the advantage of making it a big, open game.
“We played that way for 90 per cent of the games last season away from home.
“We played 4-3-3 at Crystal Palace and beat them – that was my plan to play the same way when we lost to them here.
“We did the same at Burnley and won that game playing 4-3-3 and playing really well that day.
“But in the main, we play 4-4-2 and had a decent away record last season.
“So the answer is yes we can play as good and as devastating away from home.”
McCarthy revealed Ward got the nod to start with because he played the wide left position better than anyone else in pre-season.
“Wardy was the best of them (in that position) in pre-season – he had a great pre-season and was outstanding,” he said. “He really has been terrific since his injury and he trained really well on Monday.
“But ‘Jarvo’ was always going to play at home on Saturday and he played well.
“That’s the beauty of it – I’d like to have two players as good and as competitive as that in every position, because we’d have a really good squad.”
